It was a great first day of Adult Literacy at the Espanola Campus for returning students, as well as new ones. We all look forward to another great year of learning. One of the student’s sister, (thank you Heather) made a “Welcome Back” dark chocolate cake to kick off the year! Evelyn Diebel, Professor of Adult Literacy is excited to provide some basic skills for her students to move forward towards their learning goals. Some of the students are happy to learn skills that will give them the confidence in their everyday lives, while others are excited to tap into Employment Options services in order to find a part-time job. We are all thrilled that the building is vibrating once again after a summer pause.

NATIONAL Pride
Students in the Adult Literacy program have been busy this past month with so many activities.

ADVOCACY WORKSHOP – Jess Martin from Cambrian College is a student in the Developmental Social Worker who is doing her workplace hours with us until April. She delivered a terrific thought-provoking workshop giving all students real-life scenarios to work on. Thank you, Jess. We are so happy to have you in our classroom virtually. -UNDERSTANDING and LOVE of SELF

FOOD LITERACY PROGRAM WITH COMMUNITY LIVING this month sent us to experience - VENISON VALENTINE menu treats. Students learned about the healthy benefits of deer meat and enjoyed a delicious stew for lunch on Valentine’s Day. We also had two birthdays to celebrate. We swapped Valentine’s Day cards and well wishes too. Thank you, Becky, for your contribution. – LOVE and UNDERSTANDING, Cooking and Celebrating

The Senior’s Choir sang for us at the Senior’s Complex at the Espanola Regional Hospital. Students enjoyed singing, laughing, and dancing. The Seniors are so good to us. “We could listen to them all day” – Nancy quoted.

They always have a good story they tell before they sing. -LOVE, UNDERSTANDING and Singing

Assignment: Celebrate National Flag Day – A Canadian Project
The objective was to celebrate National Flag Day on February 15. We celebrated it on February 13. Students chose a topic related to Canada and created a small project. This activity helped them learn more about Canada, its history, and its culture while practicing their literacy skills. We had cake, sang Oh, Canada and waved our flags! Thank you, Carole Hughes for the Canadian pins and paraphernalia.
Students were creative. They did some research at the Espanola Public Library too. Some topics were as follows:
The Rideau Canal, Roberta Bondar, CN Tower, The Beaver, K.D. Lang, Wayne Gretsky, Laura Secord, The Maple Leaf, Poutine and Cold Plates. – NATIONAL PRIDE, LOVE and LEARNING

Happy Chinese New Year

The Adult Food Literacy Program made a special occasion for Chinese New Year on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, by making homemade eggrolls, rice and a prosperity friendship stir fry (each student brought a vegetable to add to the wok) to celebrate the occasion at Community Living Espanola. The students learned all about the culture over a couple of zoom lessons in the early part of the month. The meal was eaten with chopsticks, jasmine tea, and fortune cookies.

Getting in the Christmas Spirit with Baking and Giving

There are some superstar bakers, pie makers and pasta rollers in the Food Literacy Program. Cambrian College and Community Living Espanola students/clients have been busy learning, preparing, rolling, and sharing their baking with family and friends.
Every Wednesday students use their digital skills to connect to cooking/baking lessons on zoom and then put recipes to the test when they come together every other week in the CLE kitchen.
Connie, Jessica and Evelyn, as well as Kim (a volunteer learning partner) help with the process. This month has been a busy month. Assorted pies, homemade ravioli and Christmas cut-out sugar cookies were on the menu.
