Mating nucs are coming home, final queens are being sent out, honey is being extracted, candles are getting wicked. This is a busy time of year but one of our favourites, because the hard work of the bees (and beekeepers 😅) will be shared soon.

It was great to see an old photo of the girls featured on the cover of the latest Ontario Bee Journal! I also had the opportunity to contribute a feature article comparing different mating nuc designs.

I enjoy tinkering, testing new ideas, and seeing what works best, so it was a pleasure to share some observations on the strengths and trade-offs of the various mating nuc systems we've used over the years.

Writing the article brought me right back to my grad school days—up late with a cup of coffee, trying to beat a deadline.

This is how NOT to catch a swarm. 😂🐝

Happy to report: no stings, the queen was found, and the colony is now happily settled into its new hive. Sometimes beekeeping doesn't go exactly to plan—but it all works out in the end!
