Interested in Indigenous languages, storytelling, children's literature, and community-based research?

The Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) is inviting applications for a Faculty of Education Undergraduate Research Award for Fall 2026.

🍓 Research Project
Fostering Indigenous Language Revitalization Through Storytelling and Children's Literature at ATEP
This research project explores how storytelling, oral sharing, and Indigenous children's literature can support Indigenous language revitalization while strengthening relationships, cultural identity, belonging, and intergenerational learning.
Working alongside Elders, Language Holders, community members, and Indigenous educators, the successful student researcher will have the opportunity to:
🍓 Support the co-creation of an Indigenous children's story grounded in nêhiyawêwin and Indigenous teachings.
🍓 Learn through relational conversations and community-based research.
🍓 Assist with the development of audio recordings and learning resources that honour oral traditions.
🍓 Contribute to meaningful research that supports Indigenous language revitalization for future generations.
This project is grounded in ATEP's 14 Guiding Values and Indigenous approaches to teaching, learning, kinship, and community well-being.

• Award: $2,000
• Research Term: September 1 – December 31, 2026
• Approximately 130 hours of research over the Fall term
• Flexible schedule that can accommodate your coursework

We are honoured to share that Dr. Evelyn Steinhauer, Associate Dean of Indigenous Teacher Education, has been recognized with the Killam Award for Excellence in Mentoring, celebrating her exceptional commitment to mentorship across undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and emerging scholars.

Dr. Steinhauer’s recognition speaks to what so many within ATEP already experience daily: mentorship that is deeply relational, grounded in care, and sustained through a lifelong commitment to Indigenous teacher education. As she so powerfully describes in her own words, mentorship is not separate from teaching, leadership, or research; it is a relational responsibility rooted in nêhiyaw teachings of kinship, wâhkôhtowin. It is carried through everyday acts of presence, encouragement, guidance, and advocacy, especially in moments when students are navigating uncertainty, transition, or challenge.

Within ATEP, Dr. Steinhauer has long been a guiding presence, our North Star, shaping how we understand what it means to support learners not only academically, but as their whole selves. Her mentorship practice reflects and uplifts ATEP’s guiding values: relational accountability, respect, reciprocity, and a deep commitment to student flourishing. She models what it means to build learning environments where Indigenous students are not only supported, but truly recognized for the strength of their languages, histories, responsibilities, and ways of knowing.

Her impact extends far beyond individual relationships and the University of Alberta. Through her leadership, countless students, colleagues, and emerging teachers and educational professionals have been supported into their own roles as teachers, researchers, and community leaders. In this way, her mentorship continues to move forward through generations, woven into classrooms, communities, and futures yet to come.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Steinhauer on this well-deserved recognition and our gratitude for the steady, thoughtful, transformative, and always loving way she continues to shape ATEP and Indigenous teacher education at the University of Alberta.

Ignite Centre for eLearning is a fully-accredited, non-profit online school with Alberta certificated teachers. Ignite has partnered with Nightwind Treatment Centre, a fully-accredited youth treatment program to offer in-person and online learning opportunities through an Education Programs in an Institution grant (EPI). Nightwind supports youth ages 12 to 21 within a trauma-informed, in-patient treatment environment grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing.

The Nightwind Program includes four sites to meet the individual needs of youth: Kihew School within Sturgeon County just west of Legal (7 students), Stony Creek School in Athabasca County north of Tawatinaw Ski Hill (7 students), Grandmother Turtle House in Westlock (4 students) and Thunderbird Landing in Westlock County (4 students).

Certificated Teacher
One Full-time teacher position for one or two of the Nightwind sites, following a standard school calendar schedule providing support for low-enrollment classrooms. Part-time employment may also be available.

Qualifications & Experience:
● A committed, caring educator who is able to create a learning environment focused on success for all students, especially those who have experienced little to no school success.
● Knowledge of working with Indigenous youth and the ability to integrate culture into their programs of study.
● Collaborative educator with a demonstrated ability to engage staff in student-focused learning and development.
● Exceptional interpersonal skills that create and enhance positive relationship(s) with students, school staff, institutional program staff and caseworkers for youth.
● Experience with evidence-based decision-making and a passion for leading literacy and numeracy interventions is essential.
● Results-oriented professional with a strong commitment to continuous improvement.
● Flexible and responsive in meeting the educational and developmental needs of diverse students.
● Experience using and supporting staff with multiple approaches to supporting student behaviours of concern is essential.
● Broad curricular background focused on Junior High and High School courses and committed to helping youth earn credits toward high school completion.

Educational/Professional Requirements:
● Teacher certification in Alberta
● Experience supporting youth with behaviours of concerns is essential
● Training such as Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA) and/or Supporting Individual Valued Attachments (SIVA) is an asset
● The ability/willingness to enhance learning through digital learning platforms is required.

These temporary positions run from May to August 2026 and are open to Métis students between the ages of 17-29 who are currently enrolled in full-time post-secondary studies and returning to full-time studies in September 2026.

This is a great opportunity for Métis students, especially those enrolled in a Bachelor of Education program, to gain hands-on experience in K-12 Métis education, curriculum and resource development, and professional learning.
