Welcome to the Improving Health with Kefir study page. 🥛🥛🥛
Improving Health with Kefir is a 12-week nutrition research study conducted in Edmonton, Alberta at the Human Nutrition Research Unit at the University of Alberta. The study is led by Dr. Willing and Dr. Richard and has received research ethics approval (Ethics ID Pro00139307).
In this study, eligible participants are randomly assigned to consume either traditional kefir or an unfermented milk control (chocolate or strawberry flavour) for 12 weeks.
The main objectives of the study are to investigate how kefir consumption may impact fasting blood sugar, metabolic health, the microbiome, and immune system in adults with elevated blood sugars or type 2 diabetes, or those at risk due to overweight or living with obesity.
Who may be eligible to participate:
• Age 24 to 70
• BMI above 25 (or above 23 for people of Asian background)
• Able to drink milk products
• Willing to consume dairy products daily for 12 weeks
Who can’t participate:
• Pregnant of breastfeeding
• Milk allergy or lactose intolerance
• Major digestive disorders
