Thank you, Michael Gillingham, for coming to campus yesterday on Canada's National Truth & Reconciliation Day to lead a presentation on the day itself and how Lutherans are engaging with First Nations communities through a myriad of organizations, including LAMP, BC Mission Boat Society, and Lutheran Bible Translators. We're also engaging our community to think about how we can help build a positive relationship with First Nations communities and to share God's love with them. Today we welcomed to campus the Seminary Guild members, who joined us for a special St. Michael and All Angels service. Every year, the Guild presents first-year M.Div. students with a Pastoral Companion book and a specially hand crafted cross by Stu Jansen, who is a member of the Guild and a long-time supporter of the seminary. It's a wonderful feeling to gather as a community and worship together and join in fellowship.

Get to know our new student, Josh, in his own words!

Name: Joshua Buchholtz
Year: 1 of MDiv
Home Region: West

Hello. My name is Josh Buchholtz and I am entering my first year of the M.Div program at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in Edmonton. As I begin seminary, I am excited to deepen my faith and understanding of the Bible and church in preparation for being called into the Office of Holy Ministry. I hope to be able to offer the same grace and forgiveness that I have received to those who I will serve throughout the coming years of ministry. I also hope to provide opportunities for those around me to serve using the gifts and abilities God has given them.
I was homeschooled all the way through Grade 12 and have since completed a Diploma in Radio and Television Arts (Radio), a 3-yr Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies, and a 2-yr After-degree in Education.

I got married to my wife, Madysan, in 2020 and we have since welcomed Leon (2 yrs old) to our family with baby number two expected in January! Outside of being parents, we enjoy spending time out at the lake, going paddle boarding, for walks, and playing pickleball, and various card and board games. We are members at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sherwood Park where I have had many awesome opportunities to serve God and others through ushering, teaching Sunday school, running a men’s basketball night, and helping to run summer camps, to name just a few. I have also had the pleasure of teaching Grade 3 at SML Christian Academy in Stony Plain for the past two years.

Get to know our new student, Levi, in his own words!

Name: Levi Hennig
Year: 1 of MDiv
Home Region: West

“Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established” (Prov. 16:3). My wife and I are excited to begin our work, this academic year. Both of us are Edmonton natives and met while in university. I worked as a teacher at Florence Hallock School on the north-end of Edmonton. I taught grade 5 and was the athletics lead. I enjoy teaching and am excited at the possibility to be a steward of God’s Word by His grace (2 Tim. 4:2). My wife works as a laboratory technologist at the University of Alberta Hospital.

What nudged me into the ministry was the desire to serve the church, of which I am so grateful to have been raised in. The final push to apply was the ever-growing concern for laborers for our Lord’s harvest (Lk. 10:2). The Lutheran Church continues to be such a blessing in my life. It is where we receive God’s good gifts through Word and Sacrament.

God has provided us with many blessings, including the support of our family and the church. We are endlessly thankful for the support God has placed in our lives. The love and generosity of our family is abundant. The people of God at our home congregation, Concordia Lutheran Church in Mill Woods, have sustained us with ongoing words of encouragement and their prayers. As I enter the beginning of the school year, we ask for the continued prayers of the church, and that God would continuing forming us to be “servants for Jesus’ sake”.

If you were anywhere near Rundle Park last Thursday, you may have encountered a rather lively group of people, the sounds of conversation and laughter, and the smell of good food. At the beginning of every academic year, the Seminary Guild hosts a community opening picnic for faculty, staff, students, and their families to get to know one another over games, food, and fellowship. What a blessing to gather with the whole seminary community!
