If you didn’t offer your child a choice today, you may have missed one of the easiest language-building moments.
Instead of:
👟 “Put on your shoes.”
Try:
👟 “Should we run or hop to get our shoes?”
One simple choice adds new words, encourages participation, and works at every stage of language development.
That’s a Good to Great moment. You’ve got this!
DM me choices if you need ideas for adding choices at your child’s language stage. Here to help! ❤️
This is called non-verbal communication. And it’s a very good sign and important milestone.
Your toddler pulling your hand, pointing, or bringing you a toy to help with? That’s communication.
Now let’s take it from good to great, be the voice they don’t have yet:
“Eat.”
“Car.”
“Help.”
“Open.”
By giving them simple words in the moment, you help connect their ideas to language.
You’ve got this.
If your toddler can say tree, that’s amazing.
Now let’s build from good to great.
The main word is just the starting point.
Adding detail is where language grows.
Not just tree 🌳→ leaves, branches, trunk, roots, bark.
Not just apple 🍎→ stem, skin, seeds, core.
Not just car 🚘 → wheels, doors, windows.
This week’s challenge:
Become a detail detective 🕵️♀️
Pick one everyday object and name all the parts together.
Small shifts = big breakthroughs.
You’ve got this!
Your child’s brain is wired to see what’s there, NOT what isn’t.
When you say “not the apple,” their brain hears “apple.” The word “not” gets skipped. All.The.Time.
I’m Paige, speech therapist for 14+ years. This is the Good to Great series, where small shifts = big breakthroughs.
This week’s challenge: at snack time, try “not the apple, not the orange, crackers!” Three times a day for a week.
Simple. Repeatable. It works.
Keep me posted on how it’s going in my comments below. If you need ideas for your own home routines, drop in comments or send me A DM for more ideas

Spring Break 2026
POV: Eleanor
Found this little treat on my phone, completely created by her and it made me smile. 💕
Mostly accurate, except the hotel on the water? Haha
Most preschoolers miss THIS question 👀
Not because they don’t know the answer… but because their brain is focused on finding what is there and not what isn’t.
The good news? This is a skill you can build through simple everyday games 🤍

I started into the online world this year because I believe every child deserves to be heard, no matter where they live or what waitlist they sit on. I’ve been able to reach beyond the clinic walls, supporting parents around the world because of the people around me at home. I get to lead a team of some of the most talented, dedicated SLPs in Central Alberta, and I’m grateful for each one of them. These are the people who show up every single day for kids and families across our region. They’re why Communication Options is what it is. And they’re a big part of why I had the courage to build Speech Buddy - because I know what’s possible when the right people are in the room. Swipe to meet them.
