Happy World Teachers’ Day!

A big thank you to our IMI instructors who share their skills, experience, and knowledge with the next generation of tradespeople.

And a special shoutout to the teachers, career counsellors, and educators in our communities who introduce students to the skilled trades and remind them that university isn’t the only pathway to a great career.

You never know when one conversation might help a student find the career that’s right for them. 🧱

This week’s Wall of the Week looks a little different.

Our team built an Orange Shirt wall as a small way to recognize the meaning behind September 30.

Orange Shirt Day reminds us that Every Child Matters, and honours the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, and their families and communities.

We encourage everyone to take the time to listen, learn, and reflect.

We celebrated Alberta Apprenticeship Day by getting out of the office and onto a few job sites to visit some of our Edmonton apprentices! 🧱

A lot of these faces will be back through our doors for technical training over the next six months, so it was great to catch up with them on the job and see what they’ve been working on.

Big thanks to Scorpio Masonry, Golden Boy, Kal Masonry Ltd., and Frank’s Masonry for having us out and letting us interrupt the workday for a few photos!

Yellowknife was slightly outside the budget for today’s site tours, but we couldn’t leave them out. Second-year apprentice Ayden sent us a photo from the Golden Boy project he’s currently working on up north. We’ll count it as a virtual site visit 😂

🧱 WALL OF THE WEEK: Keillor Stone House & Summer Kitchen

This week we’re heading into Edmonton’s river valley for a pretty incredible piece of local masonry history.

Built in 1929, the Keillor Stone House and Summer Kitchen are made from fieldstone and are part of the historic Keillor Farmstead. Nearly 100 years later, the buildings were showing their age, including failing foundations and deteriorating stonework.

This restoration was no small job. The Stone House was actually lifted up on steel beams while the old foundation was removed and rebuilt underneath it.

Even crazier? The Summer Kitchen had to be completely dismantled. The bricklayers carefully removed and catalogued the stones so they could reconstruct the walls with the original stones back in their proper locations. Shoutout to Scorpio Masonry for their amazing work on this!

And apparently we aren’t the only ones who think the work is worth showing off 😉 the project received a Silver Award of Excellence for Restoration from the Alberta Masonry Council 🏆

It’s Gender Equality Week in Canada.

At IMI Alberta, we believe there’s a place in the skilled trades for everyone.

We’re proud to work alongside unions, employers, schools, community organizations, and industry partners to help make masonry more accessible to people of all genders. Whether that means opening our doors for Try-a-Trade opportunities, creating welcoming training spaces, or simply making sure more people can see themselves building a career in this industry.

The trades are stronger when more people have the opportunity to learn, work, lead, and succeed in them.

Happy Gender Equality Week!

This week is a time to celebrate progress, recognize the achievements of women and gender-diverse people, and reflect on the work that remains to build a more equitable Canada.

Over the past 50 years, Canada has taken important steps toward gender equality, including expanding reproductive rights, legalizing same-sex marriage, supporting women’s participation and leadership in the workforce, investing in efforts to prevent and address gender-based violence, and advancing equality for 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

While significant progress has been made, barriers still exist. Gender pay gaps, caregiving responsibilities, and unequal representation in leadership continue to affect women’s economic opportunities. That’s why conversations about women in the economy are really conversations about gender equality!
