Fūga 風雅 can be translated as "common ways with grace."
The difficulties of life are a mirror which shows the frequency and clumsiness of how we falter, despite our best efforts. But fūga is when we do not give up and keep working to overcome our falls from grace.
This is the fūga of our karate.

Some martial artists idolize Bruce Lee, but my dojo finds inspiration in Yo-Yo Ma, who said, "It was only through decades of musical exploration that I came to understand my responsibility as a human being."
None of us will ever be the Yo-Yo Ma of karate, but we seek the same understanding.

We were happy to welcome Dario and Kacha to the dojo for their first class. Lucy, Craig, and then Anthony gave them an introduction to Seibukan.

In our dojo, we mask when COVID or other respiratory virus levels are elevated. We do so because we respect science; because we are obligated to care for our community, especially the vulnerable; because masking is practice of discipline.
Other clubs feel differently, but this is our way of karate.

To paraphrase György Gábori, in a time when evils are most free, I teach a little community of people who come together to learn and honour a tradition that, just like immigrants everywhere, came from a distant place; a community of effort, humility, and mutual respect and care.
