There is nothing better than making music with people you have known for about 40 years! The gig last night was a total blast, especially thanks to Kevin Elaschuk sitting in and joining us.
My very first experiences playing small group jazz were with Kevin back in 1983 or so. Many jazz crimes were committed on my part, but I so valued the experience of playing with more accomplished musicians like he, Owen Howard, Stuart Crosley and others. Inauspicious beginnings!
Thanks to OLD friends Jim Head (g), Rubim de Toledo (b) and newer friend Dave Laing (d) for a rollicking good night at Continental Treat Fine Bistro - Downtown.

• Antoniuk - Jazz - Edmonton - Tonight •
What you'll see:
1) Jeff and Geddy Lee playing a mashup of "Donna Lee" and "YYZ" (they have the same lyrics).
2) William Shatner doing a spoken word recitation of the script of "The Trouble With Tribbles" over the quartet playing "Stablemates."
3) Pierre Trudeau will take off his shoe and play a floor tom solo on Dave Laing's drums with it.
To be fair some of this is still in the works, but the band has confidence that at least some of this is going to happen.

We finished up my week-long residency at Capilano University yesterday with a wonderful saxophone geek-fest. It was an honor (and an honour) to co-teach the two hour session with Steve Kaldestad. What a great player and passionate teacher. I learned a ton just sitting beside him.
There were about 17 or 18 saxophonists in attendance, from middle school and high school musicians to college plays to adult semi-pros. It was so good playing together, sharing ideas about warm-ups and tone, articulation and vibrato, harmonics and sub tones. I told you it was a geek-fest!
Thanks CapU! Hope to see you again soon.

I am so excited to be heading up to beautiful Vancouver British Columbia this coming week to spend time with the Capilano University Department of Music. Two fantastic friends, Brad Turner and Steve Kaldestadhave kindly invited me up to do some teaching and concerts, and I can't wait. Brad and I did our masters together at UNT back in the day, so this will be a fantastic reunion.
Pease join us on Friday, October 25 for the concert with the big band and the faculty.

The JazzWire Jam: tonight in Annapolis.
• The Change Of Seasons & The Jazz Intelligencia •
Being from Canada, I've always loved the four seasons. Renewal, change, a new chapter . . . all of that. Most especially, I love the jackets. Each season is a chance to be reminded of an old friend you haven't seen for maybe six months. I truly get great joy out of rediscovering my jackets each fall.
Today's trip down memory lane is one I bought a couple years ago for a chilly tour to Korea with dear (and OLD) friend Jens Lindemann. I really dig this jacket.
Related: come to the JazzWire Jam Session this Thursday night at 49 West Coffeehouse, Winebar & Gallery. You can see the jacket up close, and I'll even let you wear it a bit if you like.
Play, listen, or just come and be seen by the jazz intelligencia who is always hovering nearby. You can't go wrong. October 17, 7:30 - 10pm.
Don’t tell the general public, but *music* get’s easier and easier, the more you do it.

• Saxophonists Deep In The Weeds •
Q: Side "C," or just flipping from B to C the old school way?
A: Only in rare and specific circumstances do I ever use the Side C Key. Generally I just "flip" from B to C, and when necessary, take the horn out of my mouth and look at it like it's broken and then continue on. It fools most folks most of the time, and I don't have to learn how to press yet another key.
• Reed Clipper •
Yup, I routinely use the Cordier reed clipper I bought back in 1987. It's rusty, and offers just the right amount of tetanus and botulism that I demand as an artist. That said, it might be time for a new one.
