U of A graduate student Vi Tran audited the class as a master’s student and then was a TA for SPH 303 the following semester. Congratulations to all of the 2026 University of Alberta Alumni Awards recipients! A special shout out to SPH professor Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti, (’85 PhD, ’87 MD), who was one of three alumni to receive the Distinguished Alumni Award this year. This award is the Alumni Association’s highest honour and recognizes the outstanding lifetime accomplishments of alumni who have earned national or international regard or have had significant local impact as a result of their outstanding professional achievements and/or service to society.

As a phenomenal physician and public health pioneer, Francescutti has redefined how Canada addresses injury control, poverty reduction and social determinants of health. As an emergency department physician and U of A professor, he asks questions others miss, translating curiosity into system-wide transformations that protect human dignity. Let’s give Dr. Francescutti and his fellow recipients a hand!👏

In an interview with CBC Edmonton AM, SPH professor and associate dean of education Patrick Hanington discusses his team's investigation into a whirling disease outbreak in the Upper Athabasca watershed. This disease threatens the Athabasca rainbow trout, an endangered fish species found exclusively in northern Alberta.
