U of A Anti-Racism Resource List 06/04/2020

Unified Statement: The University of Alberta Medical Students’ Association (MSA), Black Medical Students’ Association (BMSA), and Indigenous Medical and Dental Students’ Association (IMDSA) stand together against anti-black racism and racism of all forms.

The recent tragic murders of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor in the United States; Regis Korchinski-Paquet here in Canada; and countless more in the past have exposed the deep-rooted anti-Black racism that exists within our society. The BMSA, IMDSA, and MSA join our students in frustration and grief regarding these current events and would like to express our sympathy to all of our Black faculty, staff, students, alumni and volunteers. We are enraged by these tragedies, and denounce racism in all of its forms.

Racial injustice is not unique to the United States. Systematic discrimination against Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) is pervasive in Canadian society. The field of medicine is not immune. It is important to recognize that many of our current and future colleagues face these systemic barriers. Now more than ever, we must show solidarity and take action to understand the issues of race, anti-indigenousness, and anti-blackness as future physicians and as members of the community we serve. We commit to fighting systemic racism and injustice, and recognize silence or indifference as markers of complicity.

Violence between police and the public has significant health consequences. It endangers individuals directly and is associated with chronic stress and mental health difficulties. We must also recognize that racism is a major social determinant of health inequity, and is associated with worse health outcomes for minority populations here in Canada. The most recent prominent example of this discrepancy is the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on BIPOC. As future physicians, it is our responsibility to advocate on behalf of our patients.

As leaders within the University of Alberta medical student body, we must fight for equitable representation of BIPOC in the medical profession and equip our current students to combat racism and discrimination for our patients within our communities. As medical students, we must renew our commitment to allyship by analyzing our bias and privilege, and renewing our commitment to correcting injustice. We must educate ourselves to recognize racism in our profession, and its impact on patients, and hone the skills to combat it effectively. We as BIPOC or non-BIPOC must then put into action these changes, and advocate for changes beyond ourselves throughout our communities and institutions.

Here are some resources that might be helpful for us: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uSY8cUDjmbustcuXfRf791b-vWn7o7i88OhZaz85HqE/edit?usp=sharing

The MSA commits to taking action to fulfill these responsibilities in the following ways:
Working with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Initiative to address social barriers for current and prospective students, and ensure adequate representation of BIPOC students within our medical classes
Constantly re-examining our own practices and decisions as a student government to ensure we are actively involving BIPOC perspectives at all levels of student leadership, and following principles of productive allyship
Optimizing our current curriculum to incorporate meaningful discussions and exercises regarding race, diversity, equity, and intersectionality

We stand in solidarity against all anti-BIPOC racism, and are committed to the above actions within our community at the University of Alberta.

In collaboration,
Black Medical Students’ Association, University of Alberta
Indigenous Medical and Dental Students’ Association, University of Alberta
Medical Students’ Association, University of Alberta
