Have you ever thought about how people choose their executor? Most people put more thought into planning a vacation. But think about it. That decision may impact your life for a few weeks. The other will impact your loved ones' lives for possibly years. Think beyond the familial connection and ask yourself who might be willing and able to take on the role. Who would you trust. If you're not sure if you've chosen well, Executor School can help you evaluate your decision.
Most people choose an executor because they love and trust that person. But choosing an executor and loving them enough o prepare the for the role are two different things. Would your executor feel prepared if they had to take on the role tomorrow? If not, what can you do about that?
When most people think about estate planning they think about themselves and their beneficiaries. But let's not overlook the executor. If I asked your executor today if they were prepared, what do you think they'd say? Not sure? Perhaps we should talk.
You don't know what you don't know! What estate information or documentation will have your executor playing detective?
Which hat are you wearing: estate owner or executor? When thinking about end of life planning, both perspectives are needed. An estate owner may decide having a will, even providing that will to their executor, is enough. But the will only states who gets what. It doesn't answer executorship questions like: where are the assets? How to contact the beneficiaries. Where the key documents are. Or what the executor needs to do first. Preparing documents and preparing people are two different things. If you died tomorrow, what's the one critical thing your executor might struggle to find? And whatcha gonna do about it?
My future self wants me to remember that every time I've felt like throwing in the towel or I've gotten worried about the future, that was when growth happened. When I was done with it all was usually when things started to really move and shift. This is my future self reminding my present self that it always works out. Sometimes good things take longer. There is no failure, really, there are lessons learned and course corrections. It all works out in the end. If it hasn't worked out, it's not the end! You've got this! ♥️
