What can change tell us about a place?

Take a curriculum walk to look for evidence of change. As students explore, invite them to notice and wonder: What is changing? What clues tell us change is happening? What might happen next?

Student-led inquiry. UDL in action. Conversation and observation as assessment.

My favorite restaurant has great food but terrible service. I keep going back because I love the food. The service dampens the experience, but the food makes up for it.

The same thing happens with our students.

Students can demonstrate strong learning while struggling with organization, punctuality, or completing work.

Both matter. But they aren't the same thing.

Grades should communicate learning, not behaviour. A system that relies on zeros to motivate students isn't creating motivation. It's measuring who the system is working for....and who continues to be left behind.

Where are letters hiding outside?

Take a curriculum walk to find or create letters in nature. I wonder which sticks are easiest to write with? I wonder what natural objects help us make different letter shapes? I wonder what letters I can find?

Skip the tracing worksheet. Build fine and gross motor skills outdoors.

How does the way lines are placed change how something works?

Students take a curriculum walk to discover parallel and intersecting lines.

As students explore, invite them to notice and wonder about how lines are used: Where do lines create paths, connections or support? How does the way lines are placed change how something works?

Student-led inquiry. UDL in action. Conversation and observation as assessment.
