ULEC Express: A Reading Journey for Ukrainian Learners 🇺🇦📰

As part of ULEC’s ongoing work to create high-quality educational resources for Ukrainian language learning, we continue to develop ULEC Express, our monthly Ukrainian-language newspaper for children.

ULEC Express is designed for students aged 6 to 14 who are learning Ukrainian. The materials are created for different language levels, including A1, A2, and B1/B2, making the newspaper accessible to both beginners and more proficient readers.

Each issue includes short texts, interesting facts, poems, language games, jokes, comics, and activities that help children practise reading, build vocabulary, and gain confidence using Ukrainian.

У межах постійної діяльності ULEC, спрямованої на створення якісних навчальних ресурсів для підтримки викладання й вивчення української мови, ми продовжуємо розвивати нашу щомісячну україномовну газету ULEC Express.

ULEC Express створено для учнів віком від 6 до 14 років, які вивчають українську мову. Матеріали газети розроблені з урахуванням різних рівнів володіння українською мовою - A1, A2 та B1/B2, що робить її доступною як для початківців, так і для більш досвідчених читачів.

Кожен випуск містить короткі тексти, цікаві факти, вірші, мовні ігри, жарти, комікси та завдання, які допомагають дітям розвивати навички читання, збагачувати словниковий запас і впевненіше користуватися українською мовою.

We’re heading to Ottawa! This week, members of the CIUS team will join scholars from across Canada and the world at the 2026 Canadian Association of Slavists/ Canadian Slavonic Papers Annual Conference. We’re excited to dive into a week of vibrant discussions on the intersection of culture, memory, and human rights in Ukraine and its global communities.

On 7 May, a session with CIUS Research Program on Religion and Culture Director Heather Coleman will reflect on religion in Ukraine and its consequences, and a major poster session on teaching Ukrainian as an additional language in times of war and the decolonizing of Slavic studies will feature Ukrainian Language Education Centre (ULEC) Director Olenka Bilash and ULEC Research Assistant Oksana Butkovska.

CIUS Director Natalia Khanenko-Friesen will participate in the panel 𝘜𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘕𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘩: 𝘜𝘬𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦. She will present on the University of Alberta-led project "Undoing the Language of Soviet Repression: Indigenous Peoples of Crimea in the KGB Files (1944–91)" and the project's overall approach to KGB "archival bias," using Operation Vozmezdie and its targeting of the Ukrainian diaspora in Canada as her case study.

On 8 May, focus will be on the Holodomor, with a panel examining public and literary responses to the Holodomor (chaired by CIUS's Jars Balan), alongside a roundtable with Holodomor Research and Education Consortium - HREC's Marta Baziuk and CIUS Acting Director Frank Sysyn on teaching genocide and famine online, both highlighting how history is researched and remembered.

On 9 May, our team’s conversations will be led by CIUS Research Associate Larysa Bilous who, as part of Panel 3.1.3: 𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘛𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘓𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘺, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘢𝘴𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢, will present "From 'Autonomists' to 'Enemies': Undoing the Language of KGB Files on Crimean Tatars with AI.”

CIUS invites presentation proposals for its international symposium, "Recentering the Humanities: Ukraine and the World," to be held this October as a highlight of the Institute's 50th anniversary celebrations.

We welcome applications from graduate students and emerging scholars to present their research at the symposium. CIUS has partnered with Razom for Ukraine to support the participation of emerging scholars. Due to limited space, only a select number of applicants will receive competitive grants to attend.

During the webinar, presenters introduced the International Sociological Field School, a joint initiative between MacEwan University and the Ukrainian Catholic University. The session explored the COIL model, which brings Canadian and Ukrainian students together for collaborative research on social issues, as well as a hope component recently added to the course.

🇨🇦 The International Sociological Field School is a joint initiative between the Sociology Departments at MacEwan University in Edmonton and the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. The program is a for-credit course that combines the study of social issues with intercultural learning and international travel. This presentation will describe the course and the Collaborative Online Intercultural Learning (COIL) model that guides it. The presentation will also include a discussion of a hope component that was integrated into the course. The panel consists of the course instructors and undergraduate students from Canada and Ukraine who participated in the 2025 Field School.

🇺🇦 Міжнародна соціологічна польова школа є спільною ініціативою кафедр соціології Університету MacEwan (Едмонтон) та Українського католицького університету (Львів). Програма реалізується як заліковий навчальний курс, що поєднує дослідження соціальних проблем із міжкультурною освітою та міжнародною мобільністю.
У межах презентації буде представлено зміст і структуру курсу, а також розглянуто модель Collaborative Online Intercultural Learning (COIL), яка визначає його педагогічні засади. Окрему увагу приділено аналізу компонента надії, інтегрованого в навчальний процес. До складу панелі входять викладачі курсу та студенти бакалаврату з Канади й України, які брали участь у Польовій школі 2025 року.

During the webinar, the speaker explored how short-term global learning can move beyond intercultural competence toward cultural safety as a more thoughtful and ethical framework for engagement. Drawing on study abroad experiences within the Ukrainian Bilingual Program in Canada, as well as case studies from Canada-Ukraine projects, the speaker reflected on what meaningful, responsible, and reciprocal intercultural encounters require today.

The webinar also highlighted how global learning programs can be redesigned to centre community voice, local priorities, and shared responsibility. Particular attention was given to the importance of humility, accountability, relationship-building, and ethical collaboration in international education.

Since 2022, many newcomer families have enrolled their children in bilingual programs, leading to rapid demographic changes in schools. The presentation discusses key challenges affecting the quality and sustainability of these programs, including curriculum alignment, availability of resources, teacher preparation, and parental involvement.
