Have you met Linda Ho?

Linda can trace her career back to a single lecture — a professor talking about microbial warfare. She knew right then that it was exactly what she wanted to do!

Today, Linda is our chair for the Centre for Culinary Innovation, working at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and process engineering, ultimately trying to figure out why people eat what they eat. Food science, as she describes it, is really just the whole journey food takes from production to your plate.

And outside the lab, Linda's a self-described shoe person. She considers her shoe collection an extension of who she is 😎

Understanding oil sands tailings starts in the lab. 🧪

Our Oil Sands Tailings Lab Techniques course walks you through the essential methods used to characterize tailings deposits, from subsampling and homogenization to solids content, bulk density, Dean and Stark analysis, particle size distribution, methylene blue index, and water chemistry. You'll learn how to run the tests and, just as importantly, how to interpret the results.

Ideal for professionals in environmental science, mining, and engineering who want to sharpen the analytical skills behind effective tailings management.

One week from today, we're opening the doors to our Centre for Grid Innovation as part of Edmonton Startup Week.

Our facility tour happens on October 6th from 2pm to 3pm. Our team headed out to Pigeon Lake with Ermineskin Cree Nation to collect some water samples.

It's part of a three-year project looking at Pigeon Lake, Battle Lake, and Buck Lake, along with the soil and vegetation surrounding them, to better understand what's driving cyanobacteria (aka blue-green algae) blooms and potentially harmful toxins in these waters.

The goal is to give Ermineskin Cree Nation the information they need to keep using and monitoring the lake safely in a way that supports their traditional practices for years to come.

On Friday, Olle Lagerquist and Heather Kaminsky joined Gail Powely and Alberta's tech and science community for the ASTech Awards Finalist Showcase.

It was a great evening of meeting the 2026 finalists, seeing the innovations they're bringing to market, and connecting with researchers, entrepreneurs, funders, and industry leaders from across the province. The sector conversations, from cleantech and energy to AI, life sciences, and ag-tech, were a good reminder of how much is happening in Alberta right now!

We work alongside industry to turn ideas into real-world results, and events like this are where the next collaborations start. Congratulations to all of this year's finalists. We're cheering you on!

What an incredible day at the Alberta Corridor Technical Symposium! 🎉

Yesterday, NAIT joined forces with SAIT and Red Deer Polytechnic for a full day celebrating applied research across our province - 150+ attendees and 15+ presentations covering everything from advanced manufacturing to human-centered innovation to sustainable water and beyond!

"Together with our collaborators across the Alberta Corridor Technology Symposium, we continue to see the strength of research polytechnics in action," says Dr. Olle Lagerquist, Associate Vice President, Industry Solutions. "This work supports commercialization, enhances the learning experience for students, and strengthens economic development and capacity building in the communities we serve. We're proud of what this collaboration has accomplished and look forward to hosting next year."

Thank you to SAIT's Applied Research and Innovation Services team for hosting such a well-run event, and to every industry partner, funder, student, and community member who showed up to connect, ask questions, and champion this work.
