This expert panel discussion will raise awareness of key legal and ethical issues at play in the Alberta government’s unprecedented use of the notwithstanding clause to shield anti-trans legislation from constitutional review. Panelists will examine how these laws intersect with Indigenous jurisdiction, impact our campus, and our public systems. Isaac Brant is the ILSA External Co-Chair. He grew up in Calgary and is a member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. He is in his second year of living in Edmonton for law school and being involved with ILSA. Before moving to Edmonton, Isaac attended Queen’s University close to his families reserve, earning an Economics degree.
When he is not doing schoolwork, he enjoys being active outside including hiking, golfing and playing Golden Bearristers Rugby. He also enjoys spending time with his cat Mouse and watching dumb comedies.

Lindsey is a member of the Otipemisiwak Métis Nation, and grew up in Calgary/Mohkinstsis. She is a 2L student with a passion for criminal law and civic activism. An active volunteer, Lindsey holds positions as Co-Chair of ILSA’s Speaker Series and Vice President (Fundraising) of OUTLaw, as well as volunteer official for the E-Ville Roller Derby league.
Lindsey comes to law after a previous career as a designer working in film and theatre. She is passionate about adult education, arts and culture, community initiatives, Indigenous justice, traditional ecological knowledge, reconciliation, and building a climate-conscious, equitable and sustainable future for all.

Meghan Breen (she/her) is a proud member of the Deh Gah Got’ie First Nation, located in the Northwest Territories, and was born and raised in Alberta. She is a first-year law student at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law, serving as VP Finance for the Indigenous Student Union and VP First Nations for the National Indigenous Law Students’ Association (NILSA). Meghan is passionate about advocacy, community leadership, and maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle through land-based activities and time outdoors.

Ella Thomson is a Two-Spirit Métis person born and raised in Treaty One territory. They are a citizen of the Manitoba Métis federation and a member of the Two-Spirit Métis local. Their family comes from the communities of St Francis Xavier and Turtle mountain Chippawa.
Ella is a 1L, and prior to coming to law school completed a Native Studies degree at the University of Alberta. In addition to ILSA Ella participates in Bearisters rugby, Out Law and Litagators hockey. In their spare time they enjoy spending time with their dog, Kookum, reading and playing sports.
