What is Studia Shumka, you ask? Studia is our preprofessional program that bridges the gap between the Shumka School of Dance and the professional dance company. Studia dancers are emerging young artists who train over ten hours per week. Studia has a repertoire of performances and have appeared at festivals, outdoor stages, and theatres throughout Western Canada. Next month, they are off on their first overseas tour of festivals and workshops in Croatia and Poland. And they are planning an Alberta tour later this year.

Studia has the unique opportunity to train and rehearse with Shumka, and have appeared on stage with the group as performers in Shumka’s Mosquito’s Wedding, Nutcracker, UKRAINKA, and the world-famous Hopak. Studia is under the direction of Shumka alumnist Alyssa Eugenio and instructed by Alyssa and Shumka alumnist Brenden Kuzma. More about Studia can be found here: https://www.shumka.com/studia-shumka/

Been thinking of coming to Shumka/Studia Shumka Auditions this Sunday? If dance is your passion, its the place to be! Auditions are open to the entire dance community. Although experience in Ukrainian dance is an asset, anyone with high-calibre training in ballet, contemporary, jazz, character dance, acrobatics, or stage experience in another style of dance is welcome.

This week marks a decade since we moved into the Shumka Dance Centre. It is a special place for artistic collaboration, growth, creation, and magic-making. We thank our students, summer campers, tenants, guest choreographers and designers, and renters over the years. You’ve helped us build a hub for dance, theatre, choral music and production in downtown Edmonton.
