EDUCATION

Courses in Early Childhood Development is an asset. Minimum grade 12. A valid First Aid/Child Care Certificate or equivalent approved by Alberta Children services. Must have a level 1.

EXPERIENCE

Previous experience in a child related field is preferred, such as a daycare, playground supervisor, summer camp, sports programs, community programs, teachers assistant etc.

ATTRIBUTES

Capable of establishing a warm and positive relationship with children. A strong commitment to an enriched childcare program. The ability to work under supervision and in a co-operative team environment. Is emotionally stable, has a sense of humor, is patient and tolerant. Takes initiative, is flexible, dependable, and creative.

JOB SUMMARY

The primary goal of this position is to assist in the provision of a supportive, enriched, and developmental program for the children. A childcare worker works as a member of a team responsible for creating a relaxed atmosphere ensuring that each child’s uniqueness is respected, and individual needs are met, creating a warm and safe environment. The extent to which a childcare worker is involved in the programming is dependent upon the following variances:
1. The number of hours worked each day.
2. Relevant education and experience.
3. Interest and initiative shown by the individual.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

ADMINISTRATIVE AND MANAGEMENT

1. Assist in implementing policies and procedures in accordance with the policies of the owner, Alberta Children’s services.
2. Supervise group and individual activities and assure health, safety and immediate needs of the children are being met.
3. Direct and guide children’s behavior according to procedures outlined by the Director and center's policies.
4. Inform the Director or the supervisor of any information regarding the child’s well being and any occurrences affecting the program, its safety and health, etc.
5. Maintain daily records of attendance for each child. Ensure that the attendance records are signed at the end of each week/month.
6. Complete and submit to the Director the Accident Report Book documenting all mishaps or unusual incidents that occur, major or minor.
7. Read and communicate through the Daily Communication Book.
8. Hand out prescribed medication ensuring that medical forms are filled out and signed by the parents.
9. Is responsible for the operation of the center in the absence of the Director, Assistant Director and Child Development Worker.

FINANCIAL

1. Recognize the center's budget constraints and operates within the program accordingly.

PERSONNEL

1. Recognizes and encourages own and others individual talents, skills, and capabilities.
2. Encourages and participates in harmonious relationships among staff members. Work in a co-operatives team environment.
3. Participate in staff meetings, providing input into programs, operations, and other concerns.

PROGRAM PLANING AND OPERATIONS

1. When possible, participates in the program planning process. All planning time will be paid to staff weekly and should be recorded on the time sheet accordingly.
2. Assists in preparing and arranging necessary supplies and materials needed and supervises the children directly.
3. Ensures that weekly snack menus are prepared and posted correctly. Prepare and present nutritional snacks for the children and submit grocery requirements to the appropriate person for purchase.
4. Ensure cleanliness of the center, performing housekeeping duties.
5. Ensures that proper documentation is completed on children’s behavior.
6. Enforces rules and/or limits for child behavior in accordance with the center's policies.
7. Creates a warm and caring atmosphere striving always to meet the unique needs of each child and striving also to strengthen that child’s family as a cohesive unit.
8. During mealtimes and other routines, help create a calm and pleasant atmosphere maintaining self-help skills and encouraging independence.
9. Discuss with the Executive Director any concerns regarding the children, field placement students, other staff, or parents.
10. Any other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or Assistant Program Director.

PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANCE

1. Provide parents with information about the center's activities and other relevant information through informal discussions, attends family events.
2. Deals openly with parents, exchanges information about their children only, interprets the daily program for them, and creates friendly, supportive relationships. Maintains contact with parents ensuring that their concerns are dealt with as they arise and are brought to the attention of the Director.
3. Keeps informed as to new developments in the childcare field through professional reading, workshops, classes and resource people.

Salary Range is $15.00 + wage top up
