World Teachers’ Day is coming up on October 5. 🌎

A teacher is never just a teacher. They are the person who notices when a student is having a hard day, makes room for questions, celebrates the small wins and helps young people see what they are capable of.

In this video, ATA President Jason Schilling reflects on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and the responsibility we share to learn, listen and take meaningful action.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association stands with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. We honour the children who never returned home and acknowledge the ongoing impacts of the residential school system.

Truth and reconciliation call on all of us to move beyond reflection toward sustained learning, accountability, and action. The ATA is committed to supporting educators in making truth and reconciliation a lived practice in Alberta schools, grounded in respect for Indigenous peoples, histories, knowledge, and communities.

Beginning Teacher Network (BTN): two ways to connect if you are in your first or second year of teaching or new to Alberta.

Cohort groups (English and French)
- Four half-day sessions during the school day
- Release time to attend
- Small-group learning with ATA executive staff officers and colleagues
- Expression of interest required; limited spaces

Open sessions
- Six sessions from 4–5 p.m. over the year
- Join one or all, no long-term commitment
- Registration through Sched to receive Zoom links and reminders

Both options give you space to ask questions, share experiences, and build confidence in your practice. BTN can also be included in your Professional Growth Plan. 👇🔗

wîcihtotân means “Let’s Help Each Other.”

The Alberta Teachers’ Association is inviting First Nations, Métis and Inuit teachers and school leaders to connect, learn and build community through three upcoming wîcihtotân gatherings.

The first two gatherings will be held virtually on December 11, 2026, and March 8, 2027. The final gathering will take place in person on June 4, 2027.

Release time costs and travel costs, when needed, are provided.

A reminder for substitute teachers planning to attend the 2026 Substitute Teachers’ Conference: early-bird registration ends Saturday, October 3.

Register by then for $50, including Friday evening dinner, Saturday breakfast and lunch, and all conference presentations. Regular registration increases to $60 on October 4.
