Sometimes the biggest impact can be seen in the little things: a child finding their voice, building confidence, making connections and discovering the joy of being themselves.

For families, seeing that growth can be incredibly meaningful. At ABC Head Start, we have the privilege of supporting children as they develop new skills, build relationships and find their place in the world.

Your support helps make these moments possible.

Help us continue creating opportunities for children and families to thrive. Donate today at abcheadstart.org/donate.

Supporting neurodivergent children starts with seeing the child, not the diagnosis, behaviour or expectations placed around them.

Children deserve to be understood, supported and accepted for who they are. That means creating spaces where children can communicate in their own ways, take the breaks they need, build trusting relationships and learn without being asked to hide who they are.

Because inclusion isn't about making every child fit the same mould. It's about meeting children where they are and giving them the support they need to thrive.

This year, ABC Head Start's Family Engagement Team made 1,852 referrals connecting families with essential resources and services. From housing and food security to financial supports, healthcare, and more. Supporting children means supporting the whole family.

Behind every referral is a family navigating a challenge, a conversation that opened a door, and a connection that can make a meaningful difference.

We’re proud of our Family Engagement Team for helping families find resources, build connections, and feel supported every step of the way.

1,852 referrals. Countless connections. Real impact.

September is just around the corner!

Starting Head Start is a big milestone for little ones, and a little practice at home can help make the transition feel more comfortable and confident.

Here are 5 simple things you can practice together before the first day:

👟 Shoes on & off - Encourage your child to practice putting on and taking off their shoes independently.

🥤 Drinking from a cup - Give them opportunities to practice drinking from an open cup.

📚 Sitting for stories - Build up their ability to sit and listen while enjoying a favourite book together.

⏰ Create a consistent routine - Start practicing your morning, mealtime and bedtime routines before school begins.

🧥 Zippers & buttons - Let your child practice getting dressed and working on those tricky fasteners.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s practice! Give your child plenty of encouragement and celebrate those little moments of independence. 🌟

We can’t wait to welcome our Head Start children and families for another amazing year!

Social and emotional development happens every day in the way we respond to big feelings, practice taking turns, solve problems, build friendships, and connect with the people around us.

The good news? You don't need a special lesson to support these skills. Everyday moments are full of opportunities to help children name their feelings, practice empathy, work through challenges, and feel safe and supported.

As we wrap up our Summer Development Series, remember that development doesn't stop when school is out. Play, conversation, movement, creativity, and connection are all opportunities for children to learn and grow.

Save these posts to come back to throughout the summer, and keep finding the learning in the little moments. ☀️

📚 Happy National Book Lovers Day!

There’s nothing quite like sharing a favourite story with your child; whether it’s a book you’ve read a hundred times or a new story you discover together.

Reading with children helps build language and communication skills, encourages imagination, strengthens early literacy skills and creates meaningful opportunities to connect.

And sometimes, the best part is simply getting cozy and reading one more story before bedtime.

What was your favourite children’s book growing up or your child’s favourite right now? Tell us in the comments! 📖👇
