We're currently looking for Bachelor of Education teachers to join our team:

Lead an inclusive, play-based classroom while working closely with families and an interdisciplinary team.
OR
Split your time between the classroom and working directly with families in their homes and communities.

Learning doesn’t always happen sitting at a table. Sometimes, it happens while running, climbing, jumping, balancing and playing.

Gross motor development is an important part of early childhood. As children move their bodies and explore what they can do, they are building strength, balance, coordination and body awareness.

These skills help children with so much more than physical activity. Gross motor development supports everyday things like navigating their environment, participating in play, developing independence and feeling confident in what their bodies can do.

At ABC Head Start, movement is part of learning.

A jump. A climb. A run across the playground. A game of catch. Every movement is an opportunity to grow!

Every child has something to say. Sometimes, the words just look different.

In our classrooms, ABC Head Start uses Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices to help children communicate when speaking is difficult or not yet possible.

AAC can give children a way to:
• Tell us what they need
• Make choices and express preferences
• Share their thoughts and ideas
• Connect with educators and classmates
• Participate more fully in their classroom
• Say “yes,” “no,” “I like it,” “I need help”, and so much more

And perhaps most importantly, AAC gives children a way to be heard.

We don't use AAC to replace a child's voice. We use it to give their voice another way to be expressed.

Because communication is more than words. Every child deserves the opportunity to tell us who they are, what they need and what they have to say.

Today, we pause to listen, learn and remember.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Residential School Survivors, their families and communities, and remember the children who never returned home.

At ABC Head Start, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, valued, heard and connected to their family, culture and community. Today is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of creating spaces where children can grow with a strong sense of belonging and where Indigenous histories, cultures and voices are respected and heard.

Wearing orange is one way to remember. Learning, listening and continuing the work of reconciliation are part of the journey.

For years, stability has looked a little different for ABC Head Start. Our classrooms have operated in spaces that required us to adapt, relocate and rebuild. Each move meant more than packing boxes. It meant moving classrooms, resources and equipment, recreating learning environments and asking children, families and educators to adjust once again.

Now, that is changing.

With the opening of West Campus, ABC Head Start now has stable locations across Edmonton, allowing our programs to put down roots in the communities we serve.

Roots that mean:
🌱 Children can grow in spaces they know and recognize.
🌱 Families can build relationships with a consistent team and community.
🌱 Educators can focus on creating rich learning environments instead of preparing for the next move.
🌱 Resources can stay where they are needed, rather than being packed up and moved again.
🌱 ABC can invest in each location for the long term.

A permanent home is about more than four walls. It’s about consistency, and the opportunity to build something that grows stronger over time.

For many ABC Head Start families, transportation is one of the biggest hurdles to accessing early learning. And for us as an agency, it’s one of our most underfunded areas.

Getting children to and from their classrooms safely and consistently is more than a ride; it can be the difference between a child being able to participate in their early learning program or missing out.

Transportation is an essential part of making early learning accessible to the families we serve, but it comes with significant costs that aren’t fully covered by funding.

We’re still looking for Early Learning Teachers to join our teams at ABC Head Start.

This is a chance to do meaningful work with children ages 3–5, creating play-based learning experiences, building strong relationships with families, supporting diverse learning needs and working alongside an interdisciplinary team.

What we’re looking for:
• Bachelor’s degree in Education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education or related field
• Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
• Experience supporting children with complex needs
• A commitment to inclusive, trauma-informed practice
• A genuine love of play-based learning

And yes, messy art ideas are definitely welcome.

The doors are open! After years of planning, partnership and community support, ABC Head Start’s West Campus is officially open.

This new permanent home in west Edmonton means more space for children to learn, for families to connect, and for our team to do what we do best: build relationships and create a place where children feel they belong.

We’re incredibly proud to see this space come to life, and even more excited to see it filled with children, families, educators and all the moments that make a place feel like home.

Thank you to everyone who helped make West Campus possible. This is just the beginning of a new chapter for ABC Head Start.
