"Next week, a University of Alberta committee will be voting on whether to increase international students tuition, inflate rent, and implement an expensive mandatory meal plan. This could mean that many students will pay approximately $1500 more next year, with forecasted increases in following years. With these proposed costs, many students will no longer be able to afford a post-secondary degree, even with the help of student loans. We understand that the university needs money to operate, but it shouldn’t be on the backs of some of our most vulnerable students. That is unacceptable.
These proposals can be voted down. Last year, the Anytime Dining Meal Plan failed at the Board of Governors because students’ stood against it. In a meeting just last week, increases to international student tuition barely passed with 7 in favour and 6 against, after substantial debate. Our students stand together. We will not accept increases targeting international students or students in residence.
If you do not think that the University should be increasing the cost of education for our students, please attend the University of Alberta Board of Governors, Finance and Property Committee (BFPC) meeting on Tuesday February 27th at 1:30PM in SAB 2-31. We can stop this, together.
