UCommons was the place to be! 🎉 Undergrads, grads, exchange students, and friends came together for an evening filled with pizza, speed friending, intercultural bingo, conversations, shared contacts, and way too much laughter. 🌎💬

Good food? ✅ New faces? ✅ New friends? ✅ Intercultural connections? ✅ Laughs all around? Absolutely. 😂

For our latest ISVS trip, we put a bunch of students on a bus for three hours to go look at very old bones🦖🦕. No Regrets.
Between the dinosaurs, the badlands, and the group photos nobody was ready for, it was a full day. A lot of the people got on the bus not knowing anyone and got off making new friends.
Thanks to everyone who came along and made it a great day. If you missed this one, ISVS has more trips on the way, so keep an eye on our page.

🧡 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation | September 30

Today, ISC is closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today is a day to honour residential school survivors, remember the children who never returned home, and reflect on the ongoing impacts of the residential school system and colonialism in Canada.

We encourage our students, families, and staff to take time today to learn, reflect, listen, and deepen their understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and communities.

Reconciliation is an ongoing commitment. May we carry these reflections forward and turn them into meaningful action today and in the years ahead.

Every Child Matters. 🧡

A little recap of what we learned in Treaty 6 Territory… Last Friday at Telus Centre was all all about learning, listening, and gaining a deeper understanding of Indigenous Peoples, cultures, histories, and ways of knowing. 🪶

A big thank you to Danni Okenew from the Faculty of Native Studies for such a thoughtful, engaging, and informative presentation! We learned about so many important topics, including the Medicine Wheel, the Indian Act, residential schools, Indigenous culture and family, traditional Indigenous dances, and so much more! It was also so meaningful to see and learn about Danni’s personal regalia and hear the stories and significance behind it. Thank you for bringing it in and giving us the opportunity to connect, learn, reflect and ask questions in a safe space as the experience was both personal and meaningful. ❤️

One of the biggest takeaways was seeing the connections between land, family, culture, community, identity, and knowledge and understanding that there is always more to learn.

And a huge thank you for staying long after the session finished to answer so many student questions! 💬 🫶Your willingness to keep the conversation going made the experience even more meaningful.

Lots to take away, lots to reflect on, and definitely lots more to learn. 🌱 Learning is a journey and this presentation was especially valuable and meaningful leading up to September 30th.

Thank you for everyone that could join us Friday. Don’t forget to check out the Residential School Memorial and programming Tuesday from 12:30-3pm in the main Quad brought to you by UASU, in collaboration with the Indigenous Students’ Union and Native Studies Students’ Association.

Our biweekly Snack&Chat took a quick rain check this Tuesday and was moved from cold outdoors to cozy indoor comfort. We’re glad the rain couldn’t kill the vibe! 🤩🙌

We had our setup for warm teas, cacao and incredible connections. It turns out that sometimes the rainy day is truly a good time to just slow down, sip something warm and exchange good laughters! ☺️

Thanks everyone for attending and anyone who missed, we hope to see you in two weeks!

🦖 From lab texts to T-Rexes! 🦕
Throwback to our epic campus community day trip to the Canadian Badlands this past Saturday! We traded the UAlberta labs and classrooms for the world-class fossils at the Royal Tyrrell Museum and took in the breathtaking, otherworldly views at Horsethief Canyon.
Huge thanks to everyone who came out, made new connections, and explored the dinosaur capital of the world with us. Check out some of our favorite moments from the trip! ✨✨
