Recently the Mahatma Gandhi Canadian Foundation held their annual Peace Meal at our school. A special guest speaker also joined our guests. That speaker was Naomi Jacko, an Inner City High School alumni.

She inspired students with a presentation that shared her own journey from "Sitting in Circle" at Inner City High School to later "Meeting the World" at the World Social Forum in Cotonou, Benin, Africa this past summer.

Her participation in that global event part was sponsored by The Gandhi Foundation, and we welcomed board members, Reva Joshee, Simone Shirvell and Netta Phillet to celebrate the trip that was made possible with their support.

Naomi brought gifts of the red kokum scarf bracelets for students at the school assembly and told her story about sharing that in Africa. It was inspirational!

A big thank you to Regan Harney, Executive Director of MusiCounts for visiting Inner City High School last Friday! MusiCounts is the biggest music education charity in Canada and provided Inner City with a $16,500 grant for music equipment from an application submitted by teacher Matt Meeker back in June 2025. This grant was instrumental in expanding our music program to meet popular demand and we are very grateful to MusiCounts for helping us upgrade our jam rooms and recording studios! Now there's more students than ever learning how to play instruments and produce music on DAW (Digital Audio Workstations) at the school. ๐Ÿค˜

A big thank you to JVC Group for choosing Inner City as the recipient of proceeds from their first annual golf tournament. JVC Group Ltd. is an Indigenous owned pipeline maintenance & civil construction company from Sherwood Park. They shared a $10,425.00 gift to us from proceeds raised by their event. The money will be used to fund a variety of wrap around supports, like hot breakfast and hot lunches. Our thanks to JVC's team - David King (Vice President) (pictured) , Jenna Penner (Controller) (pictured), Stephanie Belter (Event Manager) and JVC's President Joe Verbeek.

We appreciate JVC Group stepping up! This kind of support helps our students and school succeed. โœŒ ๐Ÿ™Œ ๐Ÿ˜

Yesterday we honoured residential school survivors, remembering the children who never returned home, and honouring generations affected by residential schools across Canada.

Our school celebrates and has always shared Indigenous stories, arts, culture, and traditions. We thank Kathleen Houle for the bannock for our BBQ. We also thank Tobey Bearhead and his drummers for providing song for our Mini Round Dance. Mostly we thank all students for their hard work this past month. Everyone here wants you to grow and succeed. Lastly, a big thanks to all staff for putting in many hours this past month to make yesterday a good day for the youth. ๐Ÿงก

Digital arts student Mya, in consultation with staff, designed this artwork for tomorrow's all-school event! All registered students can attend and there will be a special BBQ and activities.

It's also the last day that students ages 15-19 can enroll. We have room for 15 more local youth who want to start or restart high school. We offer small class sizes and supports. ๐Ÿ‘‡
