Community Service-Learning (CSL) offers University of Alberta students the opportunity to work and make a difference with a local community group, while reflecting and putting their experiences in context within a university course. These community partnerships provide opportunities for students to gain valuable experience, and to contribute and increase their awareness of the social and political life of their community. When enrolled in a CSL class, students participate in a community project that is both relevant to the course content and useful to the partnering non-profit organization. Students typically spend about 20 hours over the semester with a community organization; course assignments and activities help students learn from and through those experiences.

🎓 Want to make your degree stand out and create real impact in the community?

You can earn the Certificate in Community Engagement and Service-Learning (CSL) alongside your regular program! 🌟

This certificate recognizes students who go beyond the classroom, working with community partners, developing leadership and research skills, and learning how to connect theory with real-world practice. 💡 It’s a great way to show future employers or graduate schools that you know how to turn ideas into action.

What you’ll need to do:
- Take at least one CSL-designated course (a course that starts with “”CSL”” - CSL 100, 200, etc.)
- Complete additional courses with CSL embedded in them (3 or 4 courses, depending on your path).
- Complete one non-credit opportunity: your own volunteer experience in the community, not attached to a course, instead of completing a 5th CSL course.

📌 Apply through Undergraduate Student Services (Faculty of Arts) at any time, but before your convocation deadline.

This day is a reminder of the ongoing work of reconciliation and the importance of learning, listening, and taking action.

We encourage everyone to take time to reflect, engage in learning opportunities, and wear orange to show support for Survivors. 🧡

Community partners play an important role in student learning and strengthening communities. As a small thank you, we will deliver treats to five randomly selected CSL community partner organizations in October! 👏

If your organization is interested in a sweet treat drop off and located in the Edmonton area, please sign up at the link below to be entered into the random draw. 🍪

CSL is going abroad! 🌎

Join us for an incredible spring term with our CSL 370 course in Berlin, Germany from May 3 – 22, 2027.

We will explore how diverse German communities use street art to advocate for change and share voices and ideas that are ignored. Explore the cultural, historic, and social aspects of Berlin learning different ways to think about responsibility to community and citizenship. 🎨

This course is cross listed as CSL 370/WGS 498/GSJ 598. All listings of this course will count towards the CSL certificate.

Consent is a pressing and important issue, both on and off campus. “Consent Week” is a multi-day event coordinated by the Uniersity of Alberta’s Sexual Assault Centre with the goal of creating a safe campus culture for all.

Learn more about what true, enthusiastic consent is all about by participating in the educational events happening all over campus this week (September 21-25). From the Consent Resource Fair happing today at SUB to the The Landing Consent Collage night, there are many ways for you to learn with and talk to fellow peers about what it means to keep our campus safe.
