It's really happening! I am retiring. As I celebrate my 50th year as a lawyer and approach my 78th birthday, I’ve decided that the time has come for me to step into retirement.
On October 31st, I’ll officially be hanging up my hat and embarking on a new chapter, with my wife Donna and I looking forward to more time for travel and relaxation (and who knows what else??).

Land Titles Inflation
Well, it’s finally happened. In March 2024, the Province indicated it would substantially raise land title registration costs, and now, as of October 20, 2024, the new registration fees are in effect.
When buying, fees for both mortgages and transfers will now be $50 + $5 per $5,000 of value. (Previously, transfer fees were $50 + $2 per $5,000 of value, and mortgage fees were $50 + $1.50 per $5,000 of value.)
For example, if you are buying a property for $400,000, the fee to register the land transfer will increase from $210 to $450—an additional $240. If buyer puts down a 20% deposit and obtains a mortgage of $320,000, the mortgage registration fees will rise from $146 to $370—an extra $270.
In this scenario, that’s an additional $240 for the transfer and $270 for the mortgage, totaling an astounding extra $510! Of course, fees will vary depending on the purchase price and mortgage amount.
Remember, this isn’t a legal fee—this is a new Land Titles fee (though it might feel like a tax) that all buyers will need to pay starting October 20th.
