As we prepare to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation tomorrow, we invite educators to think about how Métis perspectives, stories, and experiences can remain part of their classrooms throughout the school year.

Our Teaching & Learning team has created and gathered a collection of resources to support that work. Some are designed specifically for September 30, while others offer opportunities to listen, reflect, ask questions, and extend understanding at any time of year.

Truth and reconciliation do not begin or end with a single day. There will always be more to learn, and we hope these resources offer a place to begin, a place to return to, or another way to keep learning together.

Beading Circle for Métis Educators 🪡

New for 2026-27, the Teaching & Learning team, in collaboration with Jocelyn Lamothe (), is excited to introduce a monthly online gathering for Métis educators.

Following the 2026 Métis Teacher Gathering, we heard from Métis educators that they were looking for more opportunities to stay connected throughout the school year, and this initiative grew out of that feedback.

These gatherings are meant to be relaxed and relational. Bring whatever you’re working on, bead alongside Jocelyn, or simply come visit with other Métis educators. Together, we’ll make space to check in, exchange ideas and resources, learn from one another, and have the kinds of conversations that often happen best when our hands are busy.

Jocelyn is not only an incredible beader, but also an experienced educator and administrator who brings a wealth of knowledge, care, and good energy to these conversations. Together, we hope to create a welcoming space where Métis educators can talk through what is happening in their classrooms and schools.

You don’t need to prepare anything in advance or arrive with something specific to contribute. Bring your beadwork, another project, or simply yourself. The circle is meant to be an easy, recurring place to spend an hour with other Métis educators and see where the conversation takes us.

Meet the 2026-27 Teaching & Learning Team!

As a new school year begins, we’re excited to introduce the Rupertsland Institute Teaching & Learning team and share a little about the work we’ll be doing to support Métis education in K–12 schools across Alberta this year.

Our team brings together experienced Métis educators who are contracted or seconded from school authorities across the province, alongside Métis pre-service teachers completing their Bachelor of Education degrees. Together, we bring a range of experiences and perspectives to our work in professional learning, resource development, educational research, partnerships, programming, and supports for Métis students, families, and educators.

Our 2026–27 team includes:

🌿 Megan Tipler – Associate Director, Teaching, Learning, and Research
🌿 Leanne Traverse – Lead, Métis Education Consultant
🌿 Aimee Robert – Métis Education Consultant
🌿 Nicole Polukoshko – Métis Education Consultant
🌿 Jory Proft – Métis Education Consultant
🌿 Kya Twa – Métis Education Intern
🌿 Zoe Yowney – Métis Education Intern

A big part of our work is building relationships with educators, schools, school authorities, communities, and education partners across Alberta. We know there is already incredible work happening throughout the province, and we look forward to finding opportunities to work together, share resources and learning, and strengthen Métis education across Alberta.

✨ Calling Métis Teachers ✨

Interested in the Master of Education in Educational Studies (MES), focused on Leadership in Métis Education?

Join us for an upcoming virtual information session to learn more about the program, eligibility, application process, and what to expect from our second cohort beginning in January 2027.

🖥️ Info Session (Zoom)
📅 Tuesday, September 1, 2026
⏰ 7:00 p.m. MST

This fully funded, part-time graduate program is designed to support working Métis educators who want to deepen their Métis cultural knowledge, strengthen their leadership and research skills, and continue learning without stepping away from the classroom.

Participants will:
• Build Métis cultural knowledge and strengthen connections to identity through Foundational Knowledge, land-based learning, and Michif language experiences
• Develop leadership and facilitation skills through workshops, professional learning, coaching, and opportunities to support learning within schools and districts
• Apply their learning through workplace-based inquiry and a final capstone synthesis grounded in their own educational contexts

This second cohort is part of a limited initiative designed to strengthen Métis leadership in K–12 education. While no additional intakes are planned beyond these two cohorts, we are excited to welcome another group of Métis educators into the program and see what grows from their learning and leadership.

08/01/2026

The Master of Education cohort, specializing in Leadership in Métis Education, concluded their Summer courses with a weeklong intensive of EDU 597: Métis Foundational Knowledge for Teachers and School Leaders.

Over five days at the University of Alberta Faculty of Education, the cohort explored the five Métis Foundational Knowledge Themes developed by Rupertsland Institute: Métis Centre of Excellence: Languages of Métis, Métis Culture and Traditions, Homeland History, Métis in Alberta, and Métis Nation Governance. Together, these themes provided a foundation for exploring Métis histories and contemporary realities, as well as the role of educators and school leaders in representing these perspectives within K-12 education.

We extend our gratitude to Leanne Traverse and Holly Brandsma, whose partnership shaped this course. As a teaching team, they braided their lived experiences, community knowledge, and academic scholarship together to create a learning environment that was academically rigorous and relationally grounded. Throughout the week, they encouraged participants to engage with complex ideas, ask difficult questions, and remain open to continued learning.

Students also had the opportunity to learn from Elders, Knowledge Keepers, community members, and scholars. Each person's contribution reminded us that Métis foundational knowledge cannot be reduced to a single voice. We have a responsibility to listen carefully to different perspectives, ask thoughtful questions, and remain open to the complexity of Métis experiences.

We are grateful to Elder Judy Letendre, who began the week by welcoming the cohort with teachings on the Languages of Métis theme. Judy reminded us that language carries spirit and memory. Her teachings invited participants to think honestly about their own language journeys and the responsibility to keep language alive, even when the road ahead feels long.

A heartfelt thank you to Natalie Pepin (from Meeting My Ancestors) for sharing teachings about the Métis fire bag and inviting the cohort to reflect on what they hope to create, gather, and carry forward in their own bundles as educators and leaders. Her visit encouraged each participant to consider the gifts they've received and the responsibilities they carry.

Our sincere thanks to Elders Maryann Stepien and Kelsey Landry, who joined the cohort during the Métis in Alberta theme. Drawing on their lived experiences, they spoke about representation, advocacy, and justice for Métis people, and shared what these commitments look like in their communities and in schools. Their reflections helped the cohort consider how these responsibilities show up in their roles as educators.

We were also fortunate to learn from Jean Teillet, who joined us virtually and shared her extensive knowledge of Métis history and the legal and political developments shaping the Métis Nation today. She brought clarity to complex issues without minimizing their significance or impact. Her session encouraged students to examine the context behind current conversations, think critically about the issues being discussed, and recognize how the past continues to shape the present.

And last, but certainly not least, a big thank you to Dan Cardinal, who guided the cohort through conversations on Métis Nation Governance. Drawing on his experience as Vice President of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Dan offered valuable insight into the realities and intricacies of governance, leadership, and decision-making. He prompted participants to think critically about nationhood, self-determination, and citizenship, while considering how these issues continue to shape Métis communities and institutions.

We also want to acknowledge the commitment and intention that cohort members brought to this course. Leadership is not about having all the answers, and it was encouraging to see each of you engage thoughtfully with the content, instructors, guests, and one another. As you continue through the program, accountability will remain an important part of the community you are building, alongside the humility to keep listening, reflecting, and growing. We look forward to seeing how these experiences influence and inform your work in schools.

As the first cohort continues its journey, we also look forward to welcoming a second group of Métis educators in January 2027. Together, these two cohorts form a limited initiative designed to strengthen Métis leadership in K-12 education. While there are currently no plans for additional intakes, we are excited to see what possibilities emerge from these two cohorts.
