Lots to do in OSC!!!

Outdoor learning is an important part of every child’s growth and development. Whether children are toddlers, preschoolers, or school-age children in OSC, being outside gives them opportunities to explore, investigate, take safe risks, and learn through real-life experiences.

Across all age groups, outdoor learning supports the whole child. It encourages physical development, social-emotional growth, confidence, resilience, creativity, communication, and a lifelong connection with nature. Children are not simply “playing outside”—they are observing, questioning, experimenting, cooperating, discovering, and growing.

When educators provide children with time, space, encouragement, and meaningful outdoor experiences, the natural environment becomes one of our most valuable learning spaces.

At Kids Club, when it comes to documenting children’s play, any moment is the moment to choose. As we have learnt in the booklet, “Flight: Alberta’s early Learning and care framework,” children are always learning. They learn while they are playing. Play is very important in early childhood programs. Play helps children learn, use their imaginations, have their own experiences to create their own stories. Play offers opportunities for growth and learning. When watching, participating, seeking, playing, persisting and caring, we can then see the child as their true self through their play. While watching and recording children playing, we are learning stories.
