I cannot highly enough recommend the production of *ANTHEM OF LIFE*, Tololwa M Mollel's fascinating adaptation of Mazisi Kunene's *Anthem of the Decades*. It's a Zulu mythological epic about the origins of humanity at our species' fate in the capricious, vengeful, wise, and loving hands of various factions of the gods. In the truest sense of the word, it's spectacular--I would say, in fact, it is the finest spectacle I've ever seen on stage, creating magic with finely-wrought poetic dialogue, live drumming, music, choral intonation, movement, dance, projections, and lighting (even of the walls, which transports one into a nightfire upon the savannah for a rendition of this cosmic tale. SEE IT WHILE YOU STILL CAN! Final show is July 6.

A great reminder that our students have a range of tactics for developing and maintaining focus. I work with an excellent grade 5 teacher who allows students to colour during story "read-aloud" time. Bringing colouring sheets that connect directly to the story creates an opportunity to connect to specific characters and story moments. This teacher also suggests that students should draw certain moments from the stories they're experiencing.
Notice and seek ways for your wide range of kids to succeed, especially when in "the good old days" there was only one way (back when a far smaller percentage of people graduated from high school).

Some of your students have never heard of such stories, but they're more common than you may think. Depending on your rapport with one or more students, you may not know how to raise the topic. You decide :) But share... especially BEFORE grade 12, so they have time to get ready!

Any teacher can oversee high-achievers. The mark of a truly great teacher is one who promotes academic and personal growth among the kids for whom it's hardest. (Sometimes that even means a high-achieving STEM kid who's always flopped in Humanities, or vice-versa.)
Important! 🙌
