Week 3 of our Cultural basket. We tour around Europe with child L and O’s family. Children loved the book that was written and created by child L and O’s grandma that talks about their heritage. From Portugal 🇵🇹 to Ukraine 🇺🇦 to Germany 🇩🇪 to Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 and to Ireland 🇮🇪

An invitation to explore lemons and oranges that supports children’s fine motor skills as they squeeze the fruits. Hand-eye coordination as the children pour and transfer the juice.

It was full of fun experimentation and discovery through our exploration with lemons and oranges.

Second year of painting umbrellas and always a hit.

A variety of ways to paint the umbrellas and cardboards enhances the children’s spatial awareness, supports fine motor skills and creative thinking.

We went to Brazil 🇧🇷 today 🥰 Week two of our Cultural Basket.

Children were all eyes and ears to Sandro as he plays the Cavaquinho while Sheena takes us to Brazil through her stories about it and showing us amazing pictures.

They showed us a picture that Sandro took from Brazil.

Showed us some different instruments that can be found in Brazil that includes the kind of guitar Sandro was playing, a Cavaquinho.

Sheena talked about the flag of Brazil and what does it represent with. The wide green color represents the lush green field and forests Brazil has. Yellow represents Brazil’s wealth in gold. Blue circle the starry sky. Stars represents the Federal regions and that their national motto was “Order and Progress”

And of course let us not forget where Brazil is most famous from, SOCCER ⚽️ and the amazing amazon river and forest that they are so popular from.

Sheena and Sandro made a hand shaker for the kids. We danced to the tune of Brazil’s famous tune that Sandro plays. We sing a long with it too.

We also learned some words like

Abraço = hug

Obrigado = thank you

Por favor = please

De nada = you're welcome

Braço = arm

We even counted 1-10 in Brazilian Portuguese.

Um, dois, três, quatro, Cinco, seis, sete, oito, nove, dez.

Some of their words are similar to Tagalog as it was somehow Spanish.

We gave each other Abraço afterwards ☺️

We looked over the map to see how far Brazil from Canada.

Sheena and Sandro were so generous enough to share their homemade Brazilian cheese bread which the children enjoyed while asking them some few interesting questions about Brazil.

Thank you Sheena and Sandro for taking us to Brazil 🇧🇷 today. We love and enjoyed having you both with us and learning about your culture, traditions and wonderful country.

We used our solar glasses again from 2 years back that we used as well when we observed the total eclipse.

For the first week we featured my hometown, Philippines. I showed them different things that my country is famous from. From jeepney, Mayon Volcano, Tarsier, Barasoain Church, coconut and more.

We marked the Philippines from the map and learned how far it is from Canada. How long will it take us to get there from here in Canada. Children were amaze how far it is and learned it was surrounded with wonderful sea. Then they commented, “there might be a lot of great beaches there”. I answered, “indeed it does and I have been on one of them”.

We played Chinese garter again.
During afternoon snack I made “maruya” a type of banana fritter in the Philippines. The main ingredient of this snack is a saba banana with flour, corn starch, salt, baking powder, water then sugar to finish it up.

Our Summer won’t be complete without Spray Park Fun Day 🥰 What a beautiful Friday morning ☺️

We filled our morning with lots of bubbles and giggles 🥰

Growing up I used to play this game with my neighbours and also friends at school. We can spend hours of playing outside until our parents will call us to go home. This game is called “chinese garter” which is originated from China on which they called it “chinese jump rope” then later spread globally including my country Philippines.

Today, I introduced and invited the children to come play with me. They watched me play the game while two friends holding the elastic band (garter) on each side. I jumped on the elastic band and increased its height after I successfully jumped over it. Children were cheering for me. When I finished, they all wanted to try it too.

This game supports coordination and agility development for the children. As the elastic band’s height increases, the more challenging it becomes. Child M.F. thought of doing a cart wheel over it and he succeeded. Child M tried to copy child M.F. and just kept trying.
