Aside from educating our clients to care for their nails by treating their nails like jewels (not tools!), we also want to educate them on the importance of regular cuticle oiling 🩷💎💅🏼

Natural nails are made of keratin layers. When they’re too dry, they become rigid, lose flexibility, shrink slightly.. all leading to the nails cracking or lifting away from the enhancement (even on a microscopic level)

Gel is slightly flexible and if the natural nail underneath becomes dry and brittle, it won’t flex with the gel. That mismatch can cause lifting.

Oil restores plasticity to the nail plate… especially jojoba oil which has molecules small enough to reach the nail and maintain internal hydration balance!

It’s important for beginner nail techs to practice on a training hand so they can build the muscle memory it takes to angle our brushes and files correctly!

For example, without this muscle memory built, it can be difficult to use the correct amount of pressure while sculpting the gel with the brush, or using the correct angle/pressure while e-filing around the cuticle.

Practicing on a fake hand allows us to correct mistakes before we start working on a human hand, which minimizes the chance in a beginner nail tech/student in doing something harmful on a model!

In this method I teach in my Online Gel Extension Certification, we sculpt everything first and then use our e-file afterwords to get rid of the bulk and handfile to finish our lower arch at the end 🩷

Earlier in the program we practice handfiling the shelf first before sculpting the apex! I like to offer multiple methods of doing things so students are able to find their own flow 🥰

There’s lots of ways to do things, which I think the internet forgets to remind us 🩷 find what works for you!
