Mindful Movements: Enhancing Children's Mental Health with Yoga
🧩 Mindful Movement Supports Kids with Sensory Needs
Yoga can be a powerful support for kids who are sensory seekers, highly sensitive, or prone to overwhelm.
At home, poses like downward dog, child’s pose, or seated twists can become part of a calming toolkit.
In a children’s yoga class, trained instructors incorporate songs, rhythms, visuals, and sensory-friendly modifications that support nervous system regulation.
💛 Yoga isn’t just movement — it’s therapeutic rhythm for the whole body and mind.

Should kids have chores?
From a child development perspective—the answer is yes.
Chores provide daily opportunities to build Executive Function—the brain skills children need to plan, organize, and complete tasks.
They also help children learn something even more important:
How to keep going when something feels hard.
This is how we build:
✔ Confidence
✔ Persistence
✔ Emotional regulation
We are not asking children to do chores because we need help.
We are giving them opportunities to grow.

PLAY THERAPY EDMONTON | CHILD ANXIETY SUPPORT
Why play therapy?
Because anxiety, anger, and sadness often show up in behaviour before words. Play therapy helps translate those behaviours into understanding.
Children do not grieve like adults
If your child is grieving, their experience will not look like yours.
Children often show grief through behaviour, play, and strong emotions rather than words because they are still learning how to understand and express feelings. This is not denial, but a normal part of development. You may notice changes like irritability, clinginess, sleep problems, or acting younger than expected. Children may also repeat themes of loss or separation in play, or become very physically active, using running, climbing, or rough play to release big emotions in their body. These behaviours are all ways children are trying to process and cope with grief when they don’t yet have the words to explain it.
Grief in childhood is non-linear, indirect, and deeply influenced by age and brain development.
📍Supporting children through grief across Alberta means understanding that expression looks different than explanation.

Child Therapy Creates a Safe Space
Children need safe spaces where they can explore big feelings without fear of getting in trouble.
Child Therapy provides a supportive relationship where children can:
🌱 Talk about worries
🌱 Practice new coping strategies
🌱 Understand their emotions
🌱 Build confidence
🌱 Work through difficult experiences
Adult therapy often relies heavily on reflection and conversation. Child Therapy adapts by using play, creativity, and activities that feel natural for children.
Healing and growth can happen through connection. 💛

🎮 Did you know free play has sharply declined and been replaced by adult-led or screen-based activities?
Play is how kids explore, create, and solve problems. But structured schedules and screens have edged out the spontaneous, messy play kids need most. This loss affects imagination, emotional growth, and even executive function.
👨👩👧 Parents: Block off daily time for unstructured play. Say “yes” to forts, dress-up, and boredom. Let kids lead.
🏫 Teachers: Build play-based learning into your day. Encourage exploration and creativity—project-based learning in older grades.
Did you know?
When you laugh with your child, you’re strengthening their emotional resilience.

NAVIGATING EMOTIONAL TURMOIL:
Insights into Children's Experiences Amidst Divorce
While many children may find it challenging to articulate what they observe and feel, they are still navigating through emotions such as confusion, anger, 😢 sadness, or fear. If children could vocalize their feelings, parents might approach decisions and conversations with greater sensitivity and understanding. However, verbalizing emotions often remains difficult for most children, even adolescents. Therefore, parents confronting divorce or post-divorce challenges must strive for a deeper understanding of their children's emotional experiences. 🧒👨👩👧👦
