There’s a common misconception that online learning isn't effective… that it’s harder to build connection, trust, and real relationships through a screen.
But this right here tells a different story. 💛
This moment wasn’t prompted. It was a genuine, spontaneous expression from a student who has worked incredibly hard, shown up consistently, and built a meaningful connection in our time together.
Building relationships with my students is the foundation of everything I do. Progress doesn’t happen without trust. Growth doesn’t happen without feeling safe, seen, and understood.
And yes—those relationships absolutely *can* be built online.
In fact, for many students, the virtual space becomes a place where they feel more comfortable, more confident, and more willing to take risks in their learning.
Behind every session is laughter, encouragement, challenge, and connection. The screen doesn’t limit that—it simply becomes the window where it all happens.
To the families wondering if online support can truly make a difference: it can. And to the students who show up as their full, authentic selves each session—you are the reason this work matters so much.

🎉 Celebrating 6 Years of Literacy for Life Reading Clinic! 🎉
Six years ago, Literacy for Life was founded with a simple mission: to help students with dyslexia become confident, capable readers through evidence-based literacy intervention.
What began as a small, one-person practice serving families in the Edmonton area has grown in ways I could never have imagined. Today, Literacy for Life supports families across Canada and in six countries around the world. I’m incredibly grateful that what started as a personal passion has grown into a team of six dedicated dyslexia therapists who truly love the work we do. Shout out to my amazing team: Belinda, Carolyn, Gloria, Kimberly, and Michelle!
Over the past six years, we’ve had the privilege of supporting students with dyslexia and diverse learning profiles, partnering with families to build strong literacy foundations that last a lifetime.
I’m deeply thankful to the students, families, and educators who have trusted us to be part of their learning journey. Your dedication and perseverance inspire us every day.
✨ Here’s to many more years of empowering readers around the world

A dyslexia diagnosis is not the end of the story.
It is the beginning of the journey. 💙
Receiving a diagnosis can bring fear, doubt, or uncertainty. But dyslexia does not define a person’s intelligence or potential. What truly determines progress is the right intervention.
With Structured Literacy instruction — explicit, systematic, multisensory, and evidence-based — individuals with dyslexia can learn to read. The Science of Reading supports this.
The key is not to “wait for maturity.”
The key is to teach the right way.
A diagnosis provides clarity.
Intervention provides progress.
Appropriate instruction provides opportunity.
Dyslexia does not limit the future.
Lack of appropriate instruction does.
The journey may require support, patience, and consistency — but with the right methodology, growth is real and possible. 📚✨

is a fundamental human right.
It is not a privilege reserved for a few.
It should not depend on luck, the teacher assigned that year, or the type of school a child attends.
The right to read belongs to every child.
When a child does not learn to read, it is not because they are incapable. It is because they have not received the appropriate instruction. The Science of Reading is clear: with explicit, structured, evidence-based teaching, the vast majority of children can learn to read.
Denying access to effective instruction is denying opportunity.
And denying opportunity is denying rights.
Let us defend the right to read.
Let us demand evidence-based practices.
Let us intervene early.
Let us act responsibly.
Because learning to read opens doors — academically, professionally, and personally.
And no child should be left without that key. 📚💙

🧠 To Adults With Dyslexia:
If you’ve ever felt frustrated, like you’re “not enough,” or that something in your brain just isn’t working right — you’re not alone. And more importantly: that isn’t true.
Dyslexia is not a flaw. It’s a difference in how the brain processes written language.
And here’s the hopeful part 👉
A landmark study from Carnegie Mellon University used brain imaging (fMRI) and showed that with structured, explicit reading instruction, the brains of dyslexic readers physically changed — activating reading areas to look more like those of non-dyslexic readers. Even better? Those changes were lasting.
That’s neuroplasticity.
That’s proof your brain can grow.
At ANY age.
You are not broken.
You are capable.
And it’s never too late for support. ✨
📌 This doesn’t mean dyslexia magically goes away — but it does mean:
• Your brain can improve its reading pathways
• Change at the brain level is possible
• Progress doesn’t stop just because you’re an adult
You are not “broken.” You are a brain that simply needs the right kind of instruction and strategies — not shame, blame, or unrealistic expectations.
✨ Your journey isn’t a failure — it’s proof of strength.
✨ Progress isn’t linear — especially when it comes to the brain.
✨ Support works — at any age.

📚 Dyslexia vs. “Dysteachia”
(aka: Is it a learning difference… or just not being taught?)
Dyslexia is a real, brain-based learning disability.
It affects how the brain processes language—reading, spelling, and decoding—even with good instruction.
“Dysteachia” on the other hand is not a diagnosis.
It’s what happens when students are:
• Told to “guess the word”
• Asked to memorize instead of learn
• Given leveled readers but no phonics
• Expected to read… without being taught how
One is neurology. The other is methodology.
Here’s the twist:
📉 Poor instruction can look like dyslexia.
📈 Great instruction can reveal whether dyslexia is actually there.
If a child hasn’t had explicit, systematic, structured literacy instruction, we don’t yet know what they’re capable of.
So before labeling a child as “behind,” “lazy,” or “not trying” — let’s make sure we’ve ruled out dysteachia first.
Because kids don’t fail reading.
Systems do. 😉
