September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.

What started as Orange Shirt Day, a grassroots movement to recognize the history of residential schools in Canada, was adapted as a federal statutory holiday in 2021. This day includes honouring the children who died while attending residential schools and the survivors, as well as their families and communities still affected by the legacy of the residential school system.

We encourage you to honour and learn about the legacy of residential schools year round. Also, extend your learning beyond the legacy of residential schools and learn about the many other injustices that Indigenous people have endured and continue to face today, and how they have and continue to be resilient in the face of systemic racism. Learn about the beautiful diversity of Indigenous people, their culture, language and ceremony across this country.

The first step to reconciliation is truth. There are many no and low cost options to support you in learning the true history of Indigenous people in Canada. You can borrow books from your public library, sign up for courses, take a field trip to a public Indigenous site, sign up for a program that shares Indigenous culture and language (like us, Blossoming Flower), and/or attend Indigenous celebrations in your community.

As you learn, begin making acts of reconciliation. Some examples include: making a donation to organizations supporting Indigenous people (like our parent organization, Yellowhead Indigenous Education Foundation), attending a walk as an ally to show your support for Indigenous rights, and/or purchasing goods made by Indigenous people.

Some of our preferred resources for learning about Indigenous people, their culture, resilience and the impacts of colonization and its legacy, include (links are in the comments):

•Signing up for Indigenous Canada, a 12 lesson Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) from the Faculty of Native Studies at the University of Alberta that explores the different histories and contemporary perspectives of Indigenous peoples living in Canada. You can complete this course at your own pace and there are no cost and low cost options.
•Sign up now for 4 Seasons of Indigenous Learning, an online course that runs from October, 2023 to June, 2024. Monthly modules are released and monthly guest speakers share their knowledge and experiences related to that topic. The cost is $60 for Indigenous participants and $120 for non-Indigenous participants.
•Sign up for Intergenerational Wisdom, a two day workshop facilitated by the Imagine Institute for Learning. This training is an extension of their Trauma-Informed Care training and takes on an Indigenous perspective, examining the transmission of hurt, hope, strength, and resilience through intergenerational wisdom. The cost varies depending on the funding the Imagine Institute for Learning has received.
•Visit the Indigenous Peoples Experience at Fort Edmonton Park is open Saturday, September 30 in honour of the Day for Truth and Reconciliation; tickets are available for two timeslots, 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m, at a cost of $5 for those age 12 plus. During the winter while the rest of the Fort is closed, you can visit the Indigenous Peoples Experience on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 4 p.m. from October 14, 2023 through March 24, 2024 at a cost of $12 for people ages 3-17 and $20 for those age 18+. You can also visit the Indigenous Peoples Experience from May to September with your general admission to Fort Edmonton Park.

CBC put together a list of events in the city of Edmonton that you can attend to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:
