Eastend School SADD(Students Against Drinking and Driving) is a dedicated group of high school students who work to spread the message of the dangers of mixing impairment and driving. In recent years we have taken on a role in informing our school and community about the dangers of distracted driving, particularly texting and driving.

Here is a bit more information about our speaker, Garrett Bolen!

I am 26 years old. I was born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, in a healthy and loving home. My life and the lives of my family were devastated by my drug and alcohol abuse in 2004, when I was 14 years old. I threw away everything that was important to me and destroyed every relationship that meant anything to me, in search of a happiness that would never be found. I was a very bright, young student athlete with endless potential, but spiralled down quickly into a self destructive, suicidal, stage 4 addict within a three year time frame. Luckily, I had the unconditional support of my family who never gave up on me, even when I pushed them away countless times. They admitted me into a treatment centre that saved my life. It is now 2017, I have been sober for 9 years. I now use my story and experience to educate young people on the dangers and effects that substance abuse can have on adolescents and their families.

Don't drink and drive. Your poor decision may change the life of innocent victims.

Dear Mom, I went to a party, Mom. I remembered what you said. You told me not to drink, Mom. So I drank soda instead. I really felt proud inside, Mom. The way you said I would. I didn't drink and drive, Mom. Even though the others said I should. I know I did the right thing, Mom. I know you...

Onetap is an app, invented in Calgary, that aims to reduce distracted driving in its users. The app utilizes the GPS and accelerometer in your cell phone to sense when you're driving, and it will automatically manage your calls and texts for you while you're on the road. It will reply to any messages you receive, letting the sender know that you're behind the wheel and will respond as soon as it's safe. The app will notify you about any urgent calls or texts, and will allow you to reply as soon as it senses that you're no longer in motion. There is also a feature that allows a passenger to use the phone, answering the messages or calls for you. The app is free to download, and is available in the Google play store. Currently it is only available for android phones, but will soon be available for iPhones as well. You can find more information online at www.getonetap.com.

OneTap doesn't block your alerts, it intelligently handles your incoming calls, texts and notifications in a way that keeps you connected without the unnecessary distractions. It doesn't build a wall between your device and the world, it acts like a personal assistant - while you focus on the road,…
