If you give a kid a frog, they’ll want to find a pond to go with it.

Once you take them to the pond, they’ll notice the water is covered in bright green duckweed. They’ll probably want to reach in and see how it feels between their fingers.

When they feel the cool water, they’ll remember the hidden world beneath the surface.

They’ll look for dragonfly nymphs clinging to the reeds.

They’ll spot whirligig beetles dancing in circles.

And seeing those beetles will remind them of the slow, steady magic of the seasons.

Pretty soon, they’ll start to wonder where the rain comes from and why the marsh marigolds are blooming. They’ll want to build a tiny bridge out of sticks so the ants can cross the mud.

By the time they’re finished building, they’ll have dirt under their fingernails and a spark in their eyes.

Seeing that spark will remind you that they don’t just see a frog anymore—they see a neighbour. And because they love their neighbour, they’ll want to make sure the pond stays clean and the cattails stay tall.

And chances are, if they want to protect that special little pond, they’re want to spend their time there, catching frogs 🐸
