You are the stand-on vessel. She is crossing from your port side, she is give-way, and she has not altered course or speed.

Three questions. At what point may you take action? At what point must you? And which way must you not turn?

"Hold your course and speed" is only the right answer for part of the encounter, and knowing where that part ends is the whole skill.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Protect Yourself & Verify Your IYT Training Provider

IYT Worldwide would like to remind students and members of the public that legitimate IYT certification cannot simply be purchased from an individual or third party.

IYT certificates are issued following the successful completion of the required
theoretical and practical training and assessment through an authorised IYT Partner School.

Before enrolling in an IYT course, we strongly recommend that you:

• Verify the training provider is an authorised IYT Partner School. Current authorised Partner Schools can be found on IYTNET under IYT Training Providers.

• Verify the instructor. Check the Partner School’s IYTNET listing and confirm that
the instructor is listed as an approved IYT instructor under the Associated Instructors.

If anyone offers to sell you an IYT certificate without completing the required training
and assessment, please do not proceed and report the matter directly to IYT Worldwide.

If you are ever unsure about the legitimacy of an IYT school, instructor or certificate,
contact us before enrolling or making payment. Our team is happy to help you verify
their status.

⛵ Welcome aboard, Wayfarer Sailing, our newest Recreational Partner School, based in Auckland, New Zealand.

Wayfarer operates out of Westhaven Marina on Auckland's waterfront, delivering practical training across the Hauraki Gulf / Tīkapa Moana. It is a genuinely world class place to learn: more than 50 islands stretching from Auckland out towards Kawau, Great Barrier, the Coromandel and Waiheke, with a mix of sheltered water, busy harbour navigation and real offshore conditions.

They are starting with VHF Radio / SRC, International Crew (Sail), International Flotilla Skipper (Sail), Bareboat Skipper (Sail) and ICC 24m Sail.

Modern yachts, shoreside training at the Ponsonby Cruising Club, and a practical approach built around confidence, skill and safety on the water.

Great to have Peter Linford, Stephen Plank and the Wayfarer team on board. We are looking forward to seeing IYT students out on the Gulf.

There is no off-season. There is just a different ocean.

Our Mediterranean schools are flat out in summer. Our Caribbean schools are flat out in winter. Which means whenever you happen to have two weeks free, somewhere in the network is in the middle of its best sailing of the year.

Most people plan their training around their own local season and never think about the other half of the calendar.

Flotilla or bareboat? The honest comparison.

Flotilla is not the beginner option and bareboat is not the advanced one. Flotilla suits people who want company, a route already worked out, and someone to call when something goes wrong. Bareboat suits people who want to change their mind at lunchtime.

Most people who love sailing have done plenty of both, often in the same season.

Do you need a license to charter a yacht? It is the question we get more than any other.

The honest answer is that it depends on the country, the charter company and the insurer, not on how confident you feel. Much of the Mediterranean will want to see proof of competency. Plenty of other places will not ask, right up until something goes wrong and the insurer does.

The ICC is the document most charter bases are actually looking for, and it comes alongside your Bareboat Skipper or Day Skipper rather than as a course of its own.

We have been partnering with schools to teach our courses since 1998, so we have a fairly good idea what a strong answer to each of these sounds like. A good school will answer all seven without hesitating. Any vague answer is your answer.
