Sometimes Who Walks Beside You Matters. 🌿

When you're moving through a difficult life transition, you may have people who love you deeply.

Family.

Friends.

Caregivers.

Healthcare professionals.

And they can all be incredibly important.

But sometimes you also need someone who understands grief.

Someone who understands the difference between giving advice and creating space.

Someone who recognizes that grief can show up as sadness—but also as anger, anxiety, numbness, guilt, exhaustion, confusion, or even relief.

Someone who understands that grief can begin before a loss occurs.

Someone who won't rush you toward acceptance or tell you when it's time to “move forward.”

Someone who understands that moving forward doesn't mean leaving someone—or something—behind.

It means learning how to carry the loss while continuing to live.

🌿 You don't have to navigate grief alone. Having someone who understands can make the journey feel a little less lonely.

Sometimes We Focus So Much on the “What” That We Forget the “Who.” 🌿

A dementia diagnosis.

A change in mobility.

A move.

A caregiving role.

A new safety concern.

A terminal diagnosis.

A death.

Each of these can bring practical decisions—but they can also bring grief, uncertainty, fear, and change.

That’s why I believe support needs to look beyond the immediate problem.

It’s not only:

“Is the home safe?”

It’s also:

“What makes this person feel at home?”

It’s not only:

“What needs to be planned?”

It’s also:

“What matters most to this person and their family?”

And it’s not only:

“How do we manage the loss?”

It’s also:

“How do we continue to support meaning, connection, and dignity through this transition?”

My work brings together thanatology, grief support, dementia care, end-of-life planning, and senior home safety because these areas are often deeply connected.

🌿 Supporting the whole person.
Supporting the whole family.
Supporting the transition.

End-of-life planning can feel uncomfortable.

We may worry that talking about death will make it feel more real.

But avoiding the conversation doesn’t make the decisions disappear.

Planning can give families an opportunity to talk about:

🤍 What matters most
🕊️ Wishes for care
📋 Important documents and information
🏡 Where someone would feel most comfortable
👥 Who should be involved in decision-making
🌿 What support the family may need

And there is another important part of planning that we don’t always talk about:

Grief.

Grief can begin before a death.

It can accompany a diagnosis, changes in independence, dementia, caregiving, or the realization that life is changing.

Having conversations early can give families more time to understand what matters, ask questions, prepare, and support one another.

End-of-life planning isn’t about focusing on death.

It’s about making space for the life, values, relationships, and wishes that matter most.

🌿 Planning with intention can be an act of love.

Anticipatory grief can be complicated.

You may be grieving changes that have already happened.

The future you imagined.

The relationship as it once was.

The independence your loved one once had.

The possibility of losing someone you love.

And you may feel guilty for grieving while they're still here.

But grief doesn't always begin at the moment of death.

Sometimes it begins when life changes in ways we never expected.

If you're experiencing anticipatory grief, you deserve somewhere to speak honestly about all of it—the love, fear, sadness, uncertainty, anger, guilt, and everything in between.

🤍 Support is available.

Bringing Grief, Dementia Care & Home Safety Together 🌿

I’m proud to share that I’ve completed my Senior Home Safety Specialist® (SHSS) certification.

This feels like a meaningful extension of the work I already do with individuals and families navigating dementia, caregiving, grief, loss, aging, and end-of-life transitions.

Through my work as a Thanatologist and Grief & End-of-Life Specialist, I’ve learned that loss is not always connected to death.

With dementia, families may grieve many changes along the way—the loss of independence, familiar routines, abilities, roles, and sometimes the relationship they once knew.

At the same time, families are often asking:

How do we keep our loved one safe without taking away their independence?

How do we adapt the home while continuing to honour who they are?

How do we prepare for what might happen next?

This is where home safety and safety planning become an important part of the bigger picture.

It’s not just about identifying hazards or preventing falls.

It’s about creating safety plans that reflect the person, their needs, their wishes, their abilities, and the realities of the family supporting them.

It’s about looking ahead, anticipating challenges, and helping families feel more prepared for the changes that can come with aging, dementia, caregiving, and other life transitions.

My SHSS certification allows me to bring another perspective to this work—connecting the practical aspects of safety planning with the emotional realities of grief, caregiving, and change.

Because creating a safer environment isn’t about taking away independence.

It’s about finding ways to support independence, preserve dignity, reduce risk, and honour the person for as long as possible.

🌿 Creating safety plans. Creating safer spaces. Supporting dignity. Honouring the person. Supporting the whole family through life’s transitions.

Grief is not a problem to solve. It's a journey of learning to adapt to a new version of you, a new environment, a new world since your loss.

Sometimes we need a Grief Check In to notice what you need.

Take a breath.
Put down what can wait.
Drink some water.
Step outside.
Call someone safe.
Rest without apologizing.

And if what you're carrying feels too heavy to hold alone, reaching out for support is not a failure.

It's care.

🤍 Individual grief support sessions are available.

Save this for a difficult day.
