On Thursday September 10, we officially opened Art of a Good Death at Margaret’s Place Hospice, a powerful national exhibition inviting us to reflect on death, dying, grief, caregiving and what it means to experience a “good death.”

The exhibition grew out of research led by the Isenberg Lab at Bruyère Health Research Institute, in partnership with the University of Ottawa. Led by Dr. Sarina Isenberg, Chair in Mixed Methods Palliative Care Research at Bruyère Health Research Institute, Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, and proud St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation Board Member, the project explored how art can help translate research into something people can see, feel and connect with.

Artists from across Canada were invited to interpret research about what makes a good death through their work. More than 100 submissions from artists across nine provinces were received, with selected works now travelling across the country through hospitals, hospices and art spaces. The initiative was supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Planning and Dissemination Grant.

The St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation is proud to support this stop of the exhibition during the month of September as part of our 5-year anniversary celebrations at Margaret’s Place Hospice. Hospice has become so much more than a place of care; it is also a place for connection, reflection, remembrance and important conversations about how we want to live and how we want to be cared for at the end of life.

For 51 years, the Dundas Cactus Parade has brought the streets of Dundas to life. And this year, with “Legendary Dundas” as the theme, we knew exactly who we wanted to celebrate.

The legendary residents who call St. Joseph’s Villa home.

Brigitte, 91, spent her career as a language translator. James, 73, was a star track and field athlete. Jannette, 82, owned a popular donut shop. And Peter, 100, is a war veteran.

And these are just a few of the incredible stories represented on our Campus of Care. Every one of our residents has a story that spans decades with careers, accomplishments, adventures with plenty of stories to tell.

We were so proud to have them join us in the parade alongside our incredible staff and volunteers, with the streets packed and Dundas cheering us on.

Thank you, Dundas, for showing up for us year after year. We’re proud to be part of this community, and even prouder to celebrate the legendary people who call St. Joseph’s Villa and Margaret’s Place Hospice home. 💙

Five years of Margaret’s Place Hospice. Five years of compassionate care, connection and community.

Earlier this month, we gathered with donors, volunteers, staff, healthcare leaders, families, community partners and supporters to celebrate five incredible years of Margaret’s Place.

What began as a vision for hospice care close to home became a $13-million community-built hospice with now 11 beds, made possible by the generosity, leadership and dedication of so many.

Since opening its doors in 2021, Margaret’s Place has welcomed 1,174 admissions, including 882 hospice residents and 292 respite stays, while providing care and support to individuals and families at no cost throughout their palliative care journey.

And the impact reaches far beyond the numbers. More than 45,500 visitors have walked through the doors, over 90 volunteers continue to give their time and compassion, and countless families have found comfort, connection and a place to simply be together.

As we celebrate five years, we’re honouring the people and community who made Margaret’s Place possible and looking ahead to what’s still possible. Margaret’s Place is your legacy. 💙

Five years of Margaret’s Place Hospice. Five years of compassionate care, connection and community.

It’s the biggest weekend of the year in Dundas - and we’re out at the Dundas Cactus Festival

Growing up, Helga LaBerge and Betty Harper recall telling each other that “at some point in their lives, they would live together again.”

Years later, that hope became reality at St. Joseph’s Villa.

The sisters have long shared a close bond and a similar care journey. Both live with cerebral palsy and other complex health needs. As adults, life took them in different directions—through marriage, evolving care needs and separate living arrangements—but their connection remained strong.

LaBerge moved to the Villa in March 2023 after living with her husband until his health declined and he could no longer care for her. Since arriving at St. Joe’s, she has found a strong sense of community.

“Living here has been wonderful for me,” LaBerge said. “I get to be part of a community; I have lots of friends and I get together with a lot of people that live here.”

That sense of belonging made the Villa feel like home. But when her sister arrived, it brought something different: the comfort of family, shared history and the chance to experience daily life together again.

Harper’s journey came later. After spending 10 years at St. Peter’s, she was able to move to St. Joe’s Villa with support from Ontario Health atHome, reuniting the sisters in the same home after a decade apart. Although they were able to visit each other occasionally during those years, living together again was a special reunion for both of them.

“I was really excited and happy that we were going to be reunited again in our lives,” LaBerge said. “Having the opportunity of living together again was just wonderful for both of us.”

Now, the sisters can watch movies, share meals and enjoy activities like Bingo, campfires, car shows, crocheting and outings together.

For Natalie Cameron, director of care at St. Joseph’s Villa, their relationship shows how important it is for residents to stay connected to loved ones in long-term care. She says LaBerge helps strengthen that connection by advocating for her sister and ensuring she is included in activities and programs. “Helga stands up for Betty—having them both at the Villa has been deeply meaningful for them.”

While shared activities bring the sisters joy, LaBerge says the greatest impact has been emotional. “I think living together at the Villa is good for both of us emotionally and mentally. Having the emotional bond, which we didn’t have before, is a good thing and knowing that we're both safe here.”

At St. Joe’s, we are proud to highlight stories that show how high-quality care helps older adults feel supported, connected and grounded in dignity, well-being and joy.

The annual House of Providence Picnic once again brought our entire Campus of Care together for a day filled with laughter, music, delicious food, and unforgettable memories. Residents, families, staff, volunteers, and friends gathered to celebrate one of St. Joseph's Villa's most beloved traditions, a reminder that the moments we share together are just as important as the care we provide every day.

From the BBQ and live entertainment to games, dancing, and countless smiling faces, the day was made possible by the incredible dedication of our staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. Your enthusiasm, kindness, and teamwork created a celebration that brought joy to hundreds of residents and their loved ones.

At the St. Joseph's Villa Foundation, we are proud to support opportunities that enrich the lives of those we serve and to recognize the extraordinary staff who go above and beyond to make moments like these possible. Thank you to everyone who helped create another unforgettable House of Providence Picnic. We're already looking forward to next year! 💙

When the Grade 7 students from Dundas Central Public School were thinking about how they wanted to end their school year, they chose to give back.

Together, they collected dozens of plants and flowers to donate to Margaret's Place Hospice, supporting our horticultural therapy program. During their visit, they also toured the hospice to learn more about the care and services we provide for residents and families in our community.

The impact was immediate. By the end of the day, our volunteer gardeners had already found a place for every single plant throughout our hospice gardens.

Our gardens are much more than beautiful spaces. They offer residents, families, volunteers, and staff a place to sit together, reflect, share conversations, or simply enjoy a quiet moment outdoors. These new plants will be part of those moments all season long.

Margaret's Place Hospice exists because of the generosity of our community. Every donation - whether it's time, financial support, or in this case, a collection of plants - helps create a space where compassionate end-of-life care can be provided at no cost to the families who need it.

To the students and staff at Dundas Central, thank you for reminding us that community support comes in many forms, and that every act of generosity helps make this special place possible. 🌿💚

Compassionate care isn’t only found inside the walls of a hospice. Sometimes, it’s found along a quiet path surrounded by nature. 🌱💙

Recently, members of the Dundas Blues Junior Hockey Club Leadership Team spent the morning at Margaret’s Place Hospice, rolling up their sleeves to help create a new therapeutic walking path overlooking the beautiful Spring Creek Ravine. Together, they cleared naturally overgrown areas, laid cardboard to help suppress future weeds, and spread 40 yards of mulch by hand.

This peaceful space will give residents and families a place to enjoy fresh air, connect with nature, and simply be together as part of our growing horticultural therapy program.

We’re thankful for our growing partnership with the Dundas Blues. Their dedication to service extends far beyond the rink, helping create spaces where residents and families can find comfort, connection, and peaceful moments together.

We’re so grateful for the care, time, and effort you brought to this project. We look forward to seeing residents and families enjoying this beautiful space and the special moments it will help create. 💙
