Did you guess yesterday’s mystery musical symbol?

The answer is…

A COWELL TONE CLUSTER!

Named after American composer Henry Cowell, a tone cluster is created by playing several adjacent notes on the piano at the same time.

And when I say several, I mean SEVERAL.

Cowell famously experimented with playing these clusters using his fist, palm, and even his forearm, essentially smashing down a whole bunch of neighboring keys at once to create a huge wall of sound.

Eventually, when you're asking a pianist to play so many notes at once that actually notating every single one becomes ridiculous, composers found a much simpler solution:

Just draw an ominous black rectangle over the piano staff.

That's essentially what you saw in yesterday's post!

Instead of carefully writing out every individual note, the black bar tells the pianist:

“Play everything in this area.”

It's a wonderfully chaotic piece of musical notation—and a great example of composers finding creative ways to make the piano do things it was never traditionally expected to do.

So… did you guess it?

LAST CHANCE. NEW SEASON. LET'S MAKE SOME MUSIC!

A little piece of my morning practice

Here’s a small portion of Jean Sibelius’ Étude, Op. 76 No. 2. This piece is still very much a work in progress, but I wanted to share it anyway.

It’s easy to feel like we shouldn’t share something until it’s polished and perfect—but learning an instrument doesn’t happen that way. There are missed notes, rough passages, slow progress, and plenty of repetition along the way. That’s all part of learning. ❤️

So here’s a little reminder from my practice this morning: it’s okay if you’re not perfect right away. Keep playing, keep learning, and keep improving.

Today I'd like to congratulate Mrs. Carol Tucker on her retirement and thank her for the incredible impact she has had on so many students over the years.

As one of her long-time students, I can confidently say that the lessons I learned from her went far beyond the piano. Through her teaching, she instilled discipline, perseverance, and a genuine appreciation for music that continues to shape my life today.

Mrs. Tucker's influence played a significant role in my decision to begin teaching piano myself. Watching her dedication to her students and her love for music showed me the kind of positive impact a teacher can have, both inside and outside the lesson room.

A great teacher's influence reaches far beyond the years spent as a student, and I know I am just one of many people whose life has been enriched by her guidance and encouragement.

Thank you, Mrs. Tucker, for sharing your knowledge, patience, and passion for music so generously over the years. As I begin my own teaching journey, I hope to carry forward the same love of music and commitment to helping students grow that you shared with so many of us.

Congratulations on a well-earned retirement, and best wishes for this exciting new chapter.

Anyone else start with one piece and somehow end up with every music book they own open at once? and somehow you're still printing more music...

There's always one more piece to learn!

One of my latest piano projects: *Dance of the Elves* (RCM Grade 8 Etude).

This piece has a lot of energy, movement, and character packed into a short performance. I recently started learned it and had a great time bringing it up to speed. Hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed learning it!
