On October 4, families, survivors, and communities gather in circles to remember loved ones who never came home. On the morning of Tuesday, September 29, Delta School District students and staff took part in the third annual Walk and Ceremony for Truth and Reconciliation. Students from South Delta Secondary School (SDSS) participated in a walk that started outside the school, circled the neighbourhood and ended back at the school’s theatre, where they were joined by students from several local elementary schools for a ceremony that was live streamed to all schools across the district. Other schools across the district organized walks in their own neighbourhoods.

September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Today we honour the survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. We wear orange to honour of the survivors and lost children and raise awareness about the importance of Reconciliation in Canada.

If you’re wondering what you can do to recognize and honour the day, here are a few simple steps towards Reconciliation:

* Discover whose traditional territory you’re living or working on and then learn about those Nations. Both the Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) (https://tsawwassenfirstnation.com/) and Musqueam Indian Band (https://www.musqueam.bc.ca/) websites have information about who they are and their histories.

* Check out the 94 Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action (https://ehprnh2mwo3.exactdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf) Ask yourself if there is one Call that you can commit to acting on.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is an ancient harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture. On this day, the Chinese believe that the moon is at its fullest and brightest, coinciding with the time of harvest in the middle of autumn. During the festival, families gather to share food, light lanterns – symbolizing beacons that light the path toward prosperity and good fortune - and eat mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste.

September 23 marks the annual celebration of the International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL). Established by the United Nations General Assembly, IDSL recognizes the importance of sign languages in the realization of human rights for deaf people across the globe. The day aims to raise awareness of the deaf community's issues and challenges, celebrating the richness of sign language culture and promoting linguistic diversity. It was first celebrated in 2018 as part of the International Week of Deaf People, which this year runs from September 21-27.
