We put way too much emphasis on obedience 😰 Obedience might sound great as a parent, but what it looks like when your child grows up is someone who doesn’t know how to properly engage in conflict or avoids it altogether - leaving them feeling miserable, helpless and controlled. The best thing you can do for yourself and your child is to give them opportunities to practice the art of proper conflict resolution. Teach them how to be heard in a disagreement and how to negotiate solutions. Teach them WHEN obedience is important - so that they know when it isn’t.

But to teach them, you need to learn for yourself first ❤️

Your kids pay attention to absolutely everything - they see how you interact with your friends, how you treat their other parent, how you treat yourself, and they pay special attention to everything you DON’T do. When you start to really look at you as a person, your parenting journey becomes SO much more clear!

So, how do you talk to your friends and family? & how do they talk to you? Do you stand up for yourself properly when there’s conflict? Or do you walk away passively? What do you think your child sees as they watch you interact with the world?

I of course hear often about the problems parents have with their kids bad behaviours; their kids are hitting, yelling, talking back and the parents have tried EVERTHING to get them to stop 😰 Yelling back doesn’t work, spanking doesn’t work, asking them calmly to stop doesn’t work.

This is an exhausting cycle that will never end until you take a step back and look at how all the things you tried were just attempts at solving their SYMPTOMS - or in other words - YOUR problems. It’s so important to recognize that when you have a problem with your child’s behaviour, they have one too! The yelling, hitting, talking back are all just symptoms of problems they have that they are struggling to resolve on their own. Once you start to focus on identifying WITH THEM what THEIR problems are, you’ll finally be able to find solutions that solve both your problems and theirs 👏🏼
