It's early but we're getting ready.
The next Norfolk County municipal election will use a hybrid voting system, combining online and in-person voting. Online voting will commence on October 9 and continue through to October 23. In-person voting will be held on October 26.
To help you prepare, Entente Education Canada District 12 Norfolk is working with the Simcoe and District Chamber of Commerce to sponsor a Meet the Candidates Night on Tuesday October 13, 2026 at the Port Dover Community Centre starting at 7:00pm. We intend to advocate for all older adults as this part of our community represents 24.9 % of our population and is the fastest growing segment.
Stay tuned for more in the coming months.

Do You Know This Person?
I came across articles and videos by Steven Pinker, an experimental psychologist who conducts research in visual cognition, psycholinguistics, and social relations. He grew up in Montreal and earned his BA from McGill and his PhD from Harvard. Currently Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard, he has also taught at Stanford and MIT. He has won numerous prizes for his research, his teaching, and his books, including The Language Instinct, How the Mind Works, The Blank Slate, The Better Angels of Our Nature, The Sense of Style, and Enlightenment Now. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, a two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist, a Humanist of the Year, a recipient of eleven honorary doctorates, and one of Foreign Policy’s “World’s Top 100 Public Intellectuals” and Time’s “100 Most Influential People in the World Today.” He was Chair of the Usage Panel of the American Heritage Dictionary, and writes frequently for the New York Times and other publications. His thirteenth book, published in 2025, is called When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows...: Common Knowledge and the Mysteries of Money, Power, and Everyday Life.
I have just finished reading, Enlightenment Now, which outlines how we as humans have progressed and I highly recommend it. His research seems to align with and support the vision and mission of Entente Education Canada.

A Successful One Stop Pub Crawl
We enjoyed our largest gathering of members at our June 18, 2026 One Stop Pub Crawl at Frisky Beaver in Port Dover. We even celebrated Jacob and Julie Weaver's anniversary, our newest members. This was free for members!
Members enjoyed complimentary drinks, pizza and snacks as well as our Canadian themed trivia contest.
We noted that Frisky Beaver has added covered seating, a new stage and relocated their outdoor kitchen on the premises. Very nice!
Special thanks to our Membership Committee; Lorie Dertinger, Deb Hillner and Carolynne Paton for making the arrangements and supplying prizes.

World Day Against Child Labour is observed annually on June 12 to raise awareness and prompt global action to eliminate all forms of child labor. Established in 2002 by the International Labour Organization (ILO), the day unites governments, unions, civil society, and individuals to advocate for children's rights.

Key Focus & Action 2026 Theme: "Red card to child labour:
Fair play for children, decent work for adults."
The Mission: The campaign focuses on strengthening actions like providing quality education, improving adult livelihoods, and expanding social protection for families so they do not rely on child labor.

Global Statistics
Despite global progress, an estimated 138 million children remain in child labor worldwide. Nearly 54 million of these children are trapped in hazardous work that directly endangers their health and safety. Sub-Saharan Africa carries the heaviest burden, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all global cases.

How You Can Get Involved
Educate and Advocate: Learn about the supply chains and industries that still rely on exploitation by exploring the International Labour Organization.

Support Ethical Sourcing: When shopping, look for certifications like Fairtrade, which actively prohibit child labor and support fair wages for adult workers.

Raise Awareness: Participate in digital campaigns to keep child labor elimination on the global agenda.I f you are interested, I can provide information on: Specific industries and everyday products that have a higher risk of relying on child labor. Charities and NGOs dedicated to rescuing children and funding education in high-risk areas.

A new chapter for the Entente Foundation as they bring their new strategic plan to life

The Entente Foundation is extremely excited about the next three years as they embark on a renewed mission. They will fund, share, and celebrate research, innovation, and community initiatives that build healthy, connected communities engaged in lifelong learning.
They continue to honour their roots in healthy aging, yet moving forward, they will embark on new opportunities that expand their reach, deepen community impact, and provide more inspiring Entente Education Canada members ways to give. These initiatives will position the foundation for renewed growth. Their impact areas reflect this expanded vision, connecting individuals, communities, and what Entente Education Canada members value most.
Purpose: The Entente Foundation exists to amplify the values and generosity of Entente Education Canada members and partners through collective philanthropy and innovative community impact, helping to create a Canada where everyone can live well, learn well, and age well.

Mission: To fund, share, and celebrate research, innovation, and community initiatives that build healthy, connected communities engaged in lifelong learning.

Vision: A Canada where communities foster learning, well-being, and connection across generations, creating places where people can grow, thrive, and give back.

Their Strategic Plan 2028 follows the philosophy of three overarching goals that will guide their work from 2026 – 2028.:
• Significantly increase the number of Entente Education Canada members and philanthropic partners who contribute to the Foundation
• Expand our ability to fund impactful learning initiatives and enhance the well-being of older adults across Canada
• Reinforce the value and connection that members feel toward Entente Education Canada through our shared impact

By 2029, the Entente Foundation will be a recognized national leader in advancing connection, learning and healthy aging through philanthropic giving, evidence-based action, and powerful partnerships.

Here in District 12 Norfolk, we plan to increase the number of donors to a modest 5% or about 32. We currently sit at 2%. Let's take up this worthy cause and meet this challenge!

Supporting the next generation of aging researchers

This summer, Entente Education Canada's Summer Scholars program welcomes two doctoral students to the National Institute on Ageing (NIA) at Toronto Metropolitan University — continuing a partnership that began in 2020 as a long-range investment in the well-being of older adults in Canada and beyond.
"Helping to support the next generation of aging researchers and practitioners is one of the most important things we can do," says CEO Glenn O'Farrell. "The work the NIA and others are doing — on equity, policy and how we care for one another as we age — matters deeply."
This year's scholars are Hannah Gans, a PhD student in Social Psychology at the University of Toronto, whose research examines ageism and intersectionality, and Firoozeh Bairami, a PhD candidate in Health at Dalhousie University, contributing to aging policy research and the Cost of Aging Calculator.
Since 2020, Entente has invested more than $100,000 in the program. Meet this year's scholars:
