Deer Lake Hatchery The Deer Lake Community Hatchery will help in the production and care of the fishery.

The Deer Lake Community Hatchery not only will help sustain walleye it will also allow the community to assist in the production and care of their fishery. This is a mutually beneficial relationship with the Atikokan Sportsman and Conservation Club where they share knowledge about fisheries and support each other in their objectives. The objective of this project is to help keep people connected to the fish in their homelands, what could be better than making baby fish.

This year with the help of Fleming College and the Centre for Innovative Aquaculture Production (CIAP) we placed tags in a number of Walleye that were released back into Deer Lake.

NOTICE the red streak in the fin on the back of the walleye!

Tagged fish are important for a few reasons. Tagged fish can tell us if fish are spawning year after year in the same location, spawning patterns and individual fish success at those locations. When you catch a tagged fish letting us know means we start to understand how far fish travel around the lake.
We need your help! If you catch a tagged fish please let us know where, when and if you released it or kept it.

Well it seems like the walleye spawn is quickly approaching. Had a great time presenting to some aquaculture people at the workshop this week. Got to listen to people who know a lot about growing walleye! Can't wait for the hatchery to be up and going!!!
