🧡 **Wearing Orange at CRLC** 🧡

Today, our CRLC children and educators are wearing orange as we take time to remember, learn and reflect on the history and ongoing impact of residential schools.

For us, this is about creating space for age-appropriate conversations, asking questions, listening, and helping children understand the importance of kindness, respect and caring for one another.

We wear orange to honour the children who were taken from their families, the Survivors, and those who never returned home.

And most importantly, we remember together:

🧡 **Every Child Matters.**

We’re proud to learn and grow together as a CRLC community — today and every day.

An update on Gus, from Museum Of Natural History —
Gus the gopher tortoise has been a beloved part of the Nova Scotia Museum family for generations, delighting visitors at the Museum of Natural History with his curious personality and record-breaking longevity.

Today, we’re sharing an important update about his health because we know so many of you care deeply about him.

In 2009, veterinarians found that Gus had a urinary stone — a hard lump of minerals that formed in his bladder.

These stones are common in tortoises, and it wasn’t causing him discomfort.

The only surgical option at the time would have meant drilling through his shell and a long recovery.

Given Gus’s age and excellent health, we chose to keep monitoring the stone as long as he stayed comfortable and active.

Recently, though, a CT scan showed the stone has grown and is beginning to press on surrounding tissues.

After consulting veterinary specialists, we’ve decided Gus will have surgery to remove it.

A newer, less invasive technique no longer requires cutting through his shell, which makes it safer and shortens his recovery.

The procedure is scheduled for October 13 and is expected to take several hours. While any surgery carries risks, Gus’s overall health and the exceptional care he’s receiving from his veterinary team give us good reason to expect a successful outcome.

If you’d like to wish Gus well, stop by the museum during opening hours before October 13. The best time to see him is on his daily walk at 3 p.m. You can also leave a card, drawing or letter at the front desk.

Messages of encouragement mean the most to Gus, so we ask that you leave flowers, balloons and treats at home.

Gus will return to the museum after surgery but will spend several weeks recovering away from public view.

We’ll share regular updates before the procedure and throughout his recovery, including photos, videos and a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into caring for one of our province’s most cherished ambassadors.

We know Nova Scotians and visitors from around the world are rooting for Gus.

We look forward to the day he’s fully recovered and back greeting guests.
