"How was school?" is one of the most ordinary questions a parent can ask.

For families of children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), it can also be one of the most painful. It can be met with shrugs, single words, or visible frustration from a child who has so much to say and not yet the language to say it.

DLD can impact language comprehension and use across the lifespan, affecting literacy, academic achievement, social participation, and mental health.

Speech-language pathologists (S-LPs0 are the primary professionals trained to identify, assess, and treat DLD. Early access to S-LP services changes trajectories — not just clinically, but a child’s entire life.

This Speech & Hearing Month, SAC is calling for greater awareness of DLD and equitable access to the S-LP services children need. Because every child deserves to come home and tell someone about their day.
