DLD can be hidden in plain sight.

In a classroom of 30 children, about 2 may have Developmental Language Disorder. Yet many people still do not know what DLD is.

That means children with DLD may be sitting in classrooms every day, working incredibly hard to understand instructions, follow lessons, answer questions, read, write, explain ideas, and keep up with conversations, while the adults around them may not realize language is the barrier.

DLD is common, but often missed.

When we know what to look for, we can respond with support instead of misunderstanding.

Over the next month, we are sharing daily posts leading up to Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day 2026.

This series was created by Sarah Devereaux 🇨🇦, a Canadian adult with DLD and ADHD, and the mom of a daughter with DLD and CAS.

Before you label the behaviour, check the language.

When a child has DLD, frustration can build quickly when they cannot understand what is being asked, keep up with rapid instructions, find the words they need, or explain what is wrong.

From the outside, that frustration may look like defiance, avoidance, zoning out, or “not listening.”

But often, the child is overwhelmed by the language demand.

Behaviour is communication.

When we pause and ask, “What language load might be getting in the way?” we can respond with more support and less blame.

This is something we show throughout our Dan and Daria book series. The stories help children, families, and educators understand how DLD can affect real-life moments, including frustration, misunderstandings, friendship, confidence, and self-advocacy.
