Keystone Learning Association is a prospective Arrowsmith Program site, located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. What is the Arrowsmith Program?

We are looking forward to providing the Arrowsmith Program to children, youth, and adults with learning difficulties. Well, for starters, you can think of it as a “brain boot-camp”. Similarly to how we go to the gym to exercise our bodies, strengthen our muscles, and increase our endurance — the Arrowsmith Program is like a “brain gym” where we go to strengthen our learning capacities. ☀️ This cognitive function is involved in processing concepts across all academic disciplines.

☀️ Symbol Relations is responsible for understanding and connecting ideas in life, language, and mathematics.

☀️ Strengthening this cognitive function will improve a student’s ability to understand and analyze complex abstract relationships, think critically, and comprehend at a deeper level.

BONUS: The Cognitive Intensive Program is exactly that 🔥INTENSE🔥 In six weeks, students participating in the CIP Camp will make one year’s worth of progress in the Symbol Relations cognitive function.

👻🍭 Did you know that October is Learning Disabilities Awareness Month? 🍭👻

Learning Disabilities often disguise themselves in different ways so it’s important to know what to look for:

👻 Laziness/Procrastination
👻 Class Clown
👻 Miscommunication
👻 Anxiety
👻 Tantrums
👻 Forgetfulness
👻 Stubbornness

When these behaviours are the result of a Learning Disability in disguise — these disguises are coping mechanisms for a student in distress and NOT who the student wants to be.

Students who struggle with learning often feel embarrassed, ashamed, insecure, and fearful of others finding out that they aren’t excelling in the same way that their peers are.

In order to cover up their struggles, students will do anything to distract others from finding out and unfortunately that often presents itself as misbehaviour.

Many times in these situations students are reprimanded for their poor behaviour, relationships become damaged, the Learning Disability is never noticed or addressed, and the student continues to struggle silently with no academic intervention.

The good news is:

🍭 Your brain is amazing.

🍭 When a Learning Disability is identified at any stage of life there are things you can do to reduce or even eliminate it.

🍭 Just like you can strengthen your muscles, you can also strengthen your brain and increase your learning capacities!

🍭 The Arrowsmith Program is a great option for children, youth, and adults with Learning Disabilities.

A question we get a lot around here is:
“Does the Arrowsmith Program help with Dyslexia?”

The answer is: “YES!”

There can be a number of contributing factors as to why someone has Dyslexia.

Since everyone’s brain is different, we like to start off with an Arrowsmith Assessment. The assessment will identify which cognitive functions in the student’s brain are causing the Learning Disability.

Then, based off of the assessment, the student is given a program plan that is unique to their own individual learning difficulties.

Back-To-School-Blues?

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost that time of year again.

School can be a dynamic and enriching experience. It can be a place where lifelong friendships are made and where dreams and passions are born.

School can also be stressful, deflating, and dream-crushing.

Unfortunately, Learning Disabilities have the power to consume and discourage smart and hardworking people.

Start this school year strong by enrolling in the Arrowsmith Program. Strengthen your brain, increase your learning capacities, and discover a new love for learning.

“Neuroplasticity” is a word we like to throw around a lot over here at Keystone. But what exactly is it??

What is Neuroplasticity?

Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, is the brain’s ability to change both its physical structure and its functional organization in response to training and experience, which can happen throughout the lifespan.

What was your favourite subject in school? There is a very good chance that the subject you liked the most was one that came naturally to you.

In contrast, what was your least favourite subject in school?

Was it the subject that you found extra challenging?

Was it the subject you wanted to enjoy but just couldn’t grasp the way you needed to?

Struggling to the point of frustration can lead people to become disinterested, disengaged, and to really dislike certain things.

Learning, although it can and should be challenging sometimes…it should be stimulating and not aggravating.

Good news! You don’t have to have a lifelong frustration towards learning.
