We host a booth for Oui Montessori at the Spirit of the Rockies Festival 🎊

The children's house has a beautiful backyard that needs much love. We were blessed to have a forest elf that helped us over the weekend to embrace new landscaping ideas.

We now have a bunch of delicious foods growing for our children. Herbs, tomatoes, kiwis, grapes, beans, peas.

A child’s brain grows and strengthens through everyday moments 💛

The conversations you have, the hugs you give, the books you read together, and the time spent playing and exploring all help build important neural connections. Simple things like outdoor play, routines, and encouraging curiosity create the foundation children need to learn, regulate emotions, and thrive.

On the flip side, too much screen time, limited interaction, and inconsistent support can make it harder for those healthy connections to develop as strongly.

The encouraging part? It doesn’t take perfection. Small, intentional moments each day make a lasting impact. Every cuddle, every conversation, every playful interaction helps build a stronger, healthier brain. 🧠✨

This is such an important skill for adults to learn and practice. In my experience, when we show children that we trust them, they feel respected — and that trust becomes the foundation of a strong relationship. 🫶

We often place expectations on children that are not developmentally realistic.

Emotional independence is often spoken about as if it is a goal of childhood, but in reality, it is not a developmental starting point. Children are not designed to regulate their emotions alone. Their nervous system is still forming, and regulation is built through relationship, not isolation.

What we often interpret as “independence” in childhood is actually co-regulation that has been repeated enough times that the child begins to internalize it. A calm adult presence, consistent responses, and predictable relationships gradually become the structure the child learns to rely on internally over time.

Even in Montessori environments, where independence is deeply valued, it is never emotional independence from adults. It is the slow and supported development of emotional regulation through trust, connection, and repeated experience of safety.

When a child is overwhelmed, dysregulated, or unsure, they are not failing at independence. They are doing exactly what development asks of them: seeking connection in order to find regulation.

The goal is not to have children manage everything on their own. The goal is to become the kind of consistent, responsive presence that allows them to eventually carry regulation with confidence.
