As people around the world pause to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, we offer this performance of Be Still, My Soul as a moment for reflection, gratitude and peace. Be Still, My Soul (From Finlandia, Op. 26) (Arr. Prizeman) originally performed by Libera. Adapted for saxophone ensemble by Peter Dixon. Saxophones: S/A/T - Wessex Woodwind 700 Series B - Wessex Woodwind 400 Series Remembrance Sunday (held on the Sunday nearest November 11) honors those who gave their lives in wars and conflicts. Across the UK and Commonwealth nations, people observe two minutes of silence, wear red poppies, and attend memorial services. Around the world, Remembrance Day, Veterans Day (in the U.S.), and Armistice Day (in Europe) mark the end of World War I on November 11, reflecting a shared moment to remember and thank all who served and sacrificed for peace. The hymn Be Still, My Soul began as a German text written in 1752 by Katharina von Schlegel and translated into English a century later by Jane Laurie Borthwick. In 1899, Jean Sibelius composed Finlandia, a symphonic poem expressing Finland’s resistance to Russian rule. Its calm, hymn-like finale later became known as the Finlandia Hymn. During the twentieth century, von Schlegel’s text was set to Sibelius’s melody. The result joined eighteenth-century spirituality with twentieth-century nationalism, creating a work now recognized for its enduring beauty and emotional depth.
