A message from our amazing Food Services worker:

Dear Puntledge Families,

As we wrap up the 2025–2026 school year, I wanted to share a summary of what the lunch program accomplished together.

The attached infographic tells the story well — but the number I keep coming back to is 11,843 meals provided at no cost to families. That's made possible by those of you who contribute what you can, and by the Feeding Futures program that supports schools across the Comox Valley.

Thank you for trusting me to feed your kids every day this year. It has been a genuine privilege.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer.

The Weekly: June 8-12

Hello, Bonjour, Gila’kasla

Thank you to our students, staff, and families for their support during this week's earthquake drill and student release exercise. We learned a great deal about our emergency procedures, including what is working well and areas where we can continue to improve. These opportunities help us strengthen our preparedness and ensure the safety of our school community.

From the library learning commons/library:
June 8–12 is the last week of book exchanges. Please have students return all books by June 19 or sooner so we can inventory and prepare for next year.

Concert In The Courtyard:
Our Concert in the Courtyard has been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 16 from 6:00–7:00 PM. A separate email detailing Division time slots will be sent seperately next week.

Thank you for your flexibility and understanding as we adjusted the date. Our students have been working very hard and are excited to perform for our school community. We look forward to coming together for an evening of music, celebration, and connection.

We hope to see you there!

School District Notice:
Comox Valley RCMP is reminding families that gas-powered dirt bikes and high-powered e-dirt bikes are not street legal and are not permitted on school grounds or for travel to and from school.

Schools across the Comox Valley have seen an increase in students riding these vehicles in unsafe ways near schools, neighbourhoods, roads and pathways. In some cases, students may not realize that e-dirt bikes are treated similarly to gas-powered dirt bikes under the BC Motor Vehicle Act and are subject to significant fines, vehicle impoundment and other penalties.

Comox Valley Schools is asking parents and caregivers to please ensure children are not riding dirt bikes or e-dirt bikes to school or on school property. These vehicles create serious safety concerns for riders, pedestrians, cyclists and other students.

We appreciate families working with us and local RCMP to help keep school communities safe for everyone.

The Weekly: May 25-29

Hello, Bonjour, Gila’kasla

Congratulations to the Puntledge students who took part in last week's Inclusive Sports Festival which took place at the Vanier track. Our students thrived in this welcoming space where they felt successful and proud of their participation.

We look forward to welcoming families for an enjoyable evening of music at our Concert in the Courtyard on Tuesday. Directed by Mr. C. our students have been practicing enthusiastically and are excited to share their performances with you.

Parent Help Needed:
We are looking for a tech-savvy parent with software and design skills who may be able to assist us in creating a school site map that identifies the locations of our emergency preparedness stations throughout the school. If you have experience with mapping, graphic design, or related software and would be willing to help, please email me directly at [email protected]

CONCERT IN THE COURTYARD
Tuesday, May 26 | 6:00 PM

You are warmly invited to our Concert in the Courtyard, a short and informal evening celebration of jazz, blues, song, dance, and creative improvisation performed by our students.

Families are welcome to join us in the courtyard beginning at 6:00 PM. A separate email from Emily Cummings outlining your child’s performance time was sent previously.

Parents/caregivers will line up and enter the courtyard with their children through the breezeway leading to the music room portable just before their scheduled singing time.

Please note there will be no entry into classrooms.

Performances will take place on the concrete steps in front of Division 6’s classroom.

After your child’s performance, families will exit together through the breezeway leading toward the newer portables.

Grade 7 students will remain as the “house band” in front of the library windows throughout the evening.

I respectfully acknowledge and appreciate the land on which we gather is on the unceded traditional territory of the Pentlatch, E’iksan, and K'omoks peoples (Sahtloot, and Sasitla), the traditional keepers of this land.

The Weekly - May 4-8

Hello, Bonjour, Gila’kasla

This week, our students participated in an ICBC pedestrian safety presentation. Our Grade 6 and 7 students also took part in a “distracted walking” course designed to simulate the effects of distracted driving. It was a valuable reminder of the importance of traffic safety in our neighbourhood and school zone. Please continue these important conversations at home, whether walking, biking, or driving, so we can all help keep our community safe.

Young Entrepreneur's Fair:
Tuesday, May 5 in the gym.
Come support students learning about creating a business and buy some terrific gifts for Mother's Day and for yourself! We will have all kinds of creations on offer with all items under $10 (and most under $5). Classes will have scheduled times to visit and shop, so feel free to send your child to school with a little pocket money on that day. Parents are welcome any time, so pop in and check it out! We run from 9:10 am to 2:00 with a break from 10:30 - 11:00 and another from 12:00 - 12:30 for lunch.

Class Photos: Will be taken Wed. May 6.

3D Printer Help:
Our librarian, Mme. Spearman, is looking for help getting the Learning Commons 3D printers working. Several students have said they have expert parents with 3D printers at home and she would love some tips if anyone is willing to share a bit of expertise! Please send her a message at [email protected]

Bike Theft:
We would like to remind families that several bikes have recently been stolen from our school bike racks after school hours. To help prevent this, please do not leave bikes or scooters at the school overnight. We also recommend using a sturdy lock when parking bikes on school property. If needed, we have a limited number of loaner bike locks available through the office. Thank you for your support in helping keep our students’ belongings safe.

Grade 4-7 Track and Field:
Thu. May 7. All our grade 4-7 students will be participating at the Track and Field jamboree. We look forward to a great day at the Vanier Track. Permission forms are required to participate unfortunately verbal permission is not enough. Please sign and return ASAP. There will be a concession but students should bring a packed lunch. (No school hot lunch available for grades 4-7 that day)

Comox Valley Schools Calendars:
Calendars have been approved for the next three school years: 2026–2027, 2027–2028 and 2028–2029. The calendars have now been finalized, updated and posted on the district website, along with a helpful FAQ about the calendar development and approval process.

Families are encouraged to review the calendars for important dates including the start and end of the school year, holiday breaks and non-instructional days.

View the calendars and FAQ here: https://www.comoxvalleyschools.ca/school-calendars-next-three-years/

National Child & Youth Mental Health Day:
May 7th
FamilySmart has some great resources and events available to parents, caregivers, teachers, or community members to get involved.

To join our free online events, download conversation guides for your classroom or home and explore other ways to participate, visit the National Child & Youth Mental Health Day website – www.may7icare.ca

Moving on from Puntledge:
If you know your student will be leaving Puntledge for the 2026-2027 school year please let the office know sooner rather than later @
[email protected]. We are looking at a very busy complex school again and the more time we have to plan the better.

Public Works Week Open House:
Join the City of Courtenay for and celebrate the people and services that keep our community running every day. As part of National Public Works Week, this free, family-friendly event invites residents of all ages to explore behind the scenes of public works.

Date: Saturday, May 23, 2025 — 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Location: Operational Services Center (1000 Piercy Ave, Courtenay)

Visitors can enjoy equipment demonstrations, facility tours, hands-on activities and community displays, while meeting the dedicated staff who maintain our roads, utilities, parks and infrastructure. It’s a fun and educational way to learn how public works is rooted in service and powered by community.

Children’s Colouring Contest:
Print a colouring sheet for your family before the open house! Document is attached to The Weekly email. Once the kids have finished their masterpiece, drop it off at the Operations Centre during the Open House on May 23 before 2 p.m. to be entered into a prize draw.

Isfeld Basketball Camp:
May 7th from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM @ Mrk. R. Isfeld Secondary. This camp is run by an Isfeld senior basketball player. This is a very beginner friendly camp. It will focus on skill development, teamwork, and creating a positive and energetic environment where students can enjoy the game of basketball regardless of their experience level. Integrated Child and Youth Team Comox Valley:
Mental health session Wednesday, May 13 at Mark Isfeld Secondary School from 6:30pm to 8pm in the Multipurpose Room. This will be the last one until the Fall sessions begin.

Our topic this month is Mental Health and Preparing for the Transition to Post Secondary. We will watch a video together, highlighting how after high school, post-secondary education for our youth can be exciting but also stressful if they have struggled with their mental health. We will learn from Dawn Schell (University of Victoria) and Melissa Feddersen (University of British Columbia Okanagan Campus) to discover some ways we can prepare our youth for school and support their mental health and independence while they are at school. The video presentation will be followed by a facilitated conversation with Peer Support Workers Megan Watson, and Cresslynn Brodhagen.

We know how hard things like this can be to navigate for caregivers, and would love it if you could share with families that may benefit from it.

Registration can be found by using this link: https://familysmart.ca/event/mental-health-and-preparing-for-the-transition-to-post-secondary-3/
