Students from Cumberland Community School and Lake Trail Community School had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the history, culture and daily life of China during a cultural exchange during the school year.

From walking along the Great Wall and exploring the Forbidden City to staying with host families in Chengdu, visiting local schools and seeing giant pandas, every day brought something new.

The trip gave students an opportunity to build friendships, experience another culture firsthand and create memories they will carry with them for years to come.

We are excited that the new turf playing field at GP Vanier is just about ready for action! However, workers are putting the final few touches together as we near the start of the school year. It's important that everyone stay off the new field and surrounding construction site in the weeks ahead.

We look forward to sharing news about the opening date soon!

Thank you.

The new artificial turf field at G.P. Vanier Secondary School is nearing completion.

While turf installation is wrapping up, additional work and inspections are needed before the field can open safely. Until then, the site remains an active construction area. Please stay out of the fenced zone.

We’re targeting an early September opening for public use.

Learning looked a little different this year in Lake Trail Community School’s Grade 6 Nature Class.

Taught by Jennifer Yager, students spent most of their school day outdoors throughout the year, regardless of weather, using the natural world around them as a classroom.

Late in the school year, students welcomed documentary cinematographer and Lake Trail alum Tiare Boyes, who shared her film A Special Little Fish, which explores the Morrison Creek lamprey, a unique species found only in the Morrison Creek watershed here in the Comox Valley.

Students then headed outside with Morrison Creek Streamkeepers president Jan Gemmell for a tour of the creek and a closer look at the watershed they had been learning about and to try find some lamprey.

It was just one of many hands-on learning experiences the Grade 6 Nature Class takes part in throughout the school year.

The program is a great example of flexible learning environments and nature-based learning in action, connecting learning with local people and places.
